Damo is right on all the callback characters. The "hobbit" one from Michael and Dwight's trip to New York to drop in on a coked up Ryan also had a small role in Threat Level Midnight. One character you missed was Sensei Ira. He was Dwight's sensei and the referee of the fight Dwight and Michael had. He was wearing a suit under his gi in this episode.

But, I will say that boom operators are typically young, physically fit guys. They have to hold that mic for hours a day, which does take some strength and is usually a somewhat entry-level position. So, it’s not a big stretch.
