Seeing Betty being as adorable as she is- seeing them all be happy for one another, respecting one another. Its just beautiful. Truly its beautiful. And to find out Roswaal is in fact the same one from 400 years ago (technically) is so fuckin insane lol. But can someone please explain to me the whole thing with Subaru's powers? was that him or betty... im assuming betty but still. Also, like, UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I LOVE BETTY.

Late but just finishing watching everything. A funny thought I had was, Emilia believed kissing made babies. Yet she was still willing to kiss Subaru. Meaning, she was ok with a having a baby with Subaru. Wild thought lol

2024-07-05 13:50:06 +0000 UTCTo explain Subaru's magic, yes, it's Betty. Subaru no longer has his Gate, so he can't use magic on his own. He can only use magic with Betty. She is functioning as a Gate for him when they are together. Subaru was casting magic, but he was using Betty and her mana that she had stockpiled for 400 years to do it. That being said, and this was cut from the anime, Betty isn't like other spirits. She can't absorb mana from the atmosphere like most spirits. She used to absorb mana through a special function of the forbidden library, but that's burned down and the only one who could make a new library was Echidna, whose soul was released from the Sanctuary after Emilia passed all the trials. Now Betty absorbs mana from Subaru as his body builds it up. Without Betty, Subaru would eventually die of mana poisoning due to his lack of a Gate to process the raw mana his body is building up into a state where it can flow through his body safely. Subaru isn't exactly an endless well of mana like Roswaal and Emilia. His body produces just enough mana to meet the amount Betty needs to continue living with a little bit left over that she can stockpile for other things. Without Subaru, Betty would eventually run out of mana and fade away into nothingness. So, the pair very much need each other going forward. During the battle with the Great Rabbit, Betty and Subaru used her entire store of mana from 400 years of stockpiling. Betty will die without mana from Subaru and Subaru will die without Betty to take his raw mana before it builds up enough to poison him. On to the story of Emilia and babies. This actually comes from a side story, not the actual main novel series. When Roswaal first brought Emilia home, he temporarily left her at the mansion we saw in this episode with Annerose, the little girl with hair the same color as Roswaal's that was shown in this episode. One day, they were up on the balcony overlooking the garden (the same one Emilia and Subaru were on in this episode) and witnessed two servants kissing in a corner of the garden. Emilia is very confused about what they were doing. Annerose, being all of 9 years old, tells Emilia all her worldly knowledge of kissing her parents had given her at that age. So, kissing makes babies. Emilia then turns to Puck and demands to know if that is true because that doesn't seem right to her. Puck in a weird combination of embarrassment and being a super controlling parent decides to agree with Annerose. His thoughts at the time were, "I'm still a guy, that's embarrassing, I don't want to explain how kids are made" and "She can't want what she doesn't know. If she doesn't know about it, she can't run off and do it. Then I don't have to deal with that. I'll tell her when she's married or I'll let her husband do it". It's questionable if Puck actually understands fully how babies come about since he is a spirit and doesn't reproduce. Basically he chose to skip sex ed and leave Emilia ignorant. I hate to break it to you, and the anime did skip this, but Subaru does not give Emilia "the talk" in Puck's place. He gets embarrassed when she demands to know how babies are made, and feels that it would be very awkward for him, someone who is pursuing her romantically, to explain that to her without also needing to answer the inevitable, "... and you want to do all that to me?" He instead decides a woman should explain sex to another woman and sends her to Frederica and Ram to explain sex and a woman's body to Emilia. Being virgins and combined with Emilia's innocence, both are also too embarrassed to explain. Ultimately, a camp meeting is held over the issue and it's decided that all Emilia needs to know is that kissing does not make babies and the rest can wait until she is getting married. Emilia accepts this since she already has so much to learn about history, laws, and running a kingdom for the Royal Selection and only has three years to learn it before she may be placed on the throne. For how Roswaal is body swapping, when he says he is preparing vessels for himself over the 400 years, he means having children. When his kids come of age, he overwrites their souls with his own and becomes them. Each Roswaal's middle name is the original name of each child aside from the first Roswaal. Roswaal has been both a man and a woman over the years and has given birth to what would ultimately be himself. Two generations ago, Roswaal, a woman at the time, even tried to court Wilhelm as a potential partner before eventually giving up when it became clear Wilhelm only had eyes for Theresia and instead chose to support their relationship. He cared for them both a great deal and was saddened when he heard of Theresia's passing. He was genuinely happy when he heard it was Wilhelm who struck the final blow to the White Whale.

Iirc as Puck explained it spirit magic users aren't technically magic users since they don't channel magic through their gates but uses contracted spirits, and Subaru has now swapped to do the same with Betty since his gate shattered (and as Julius stated he seems to have an affinity for spirits so for him it's probably an easier swap than for most). Also what Roswaal meant by preparing a suitable vessel is that he had children to be vessels for himself (hence "would you condemn me as an inhuman monster").
