Development Update - December 2022

Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well. First off, I want to say a big thank you to all my patrons, your support is greatly appreciated. As there are quite a lot of you now (almost 50 patrons, and roughly 7k users!), I think it would be a good idea for me to talk more more regularly about what I've been working on.

So, since my last post (May), the main things I have implemented are:

Most of those have been around for a while now, so let's take a look at the most recent one - drawing the initial rivers and oceans.

  1. Go to the landscape tab of the create settlement form:

  1. Change ‘Water configuration’ from ‘Generation’ to ‘Manually drawn’:

  1. Click the draw button, and then draw rivers and oceans to make something like:

Rivers are bodies of water that can be crossed with a bridge, while oceans cannot be crossed.

  1. Click save, and then generate the settlement, and get something like:

As part of this feature, more complicated water layouts are now possible, like lakes, branching rivers, and islands - some of these are also now generated when the generate river / oceans options are selected! I think this results in some pretty cool looking settlements, and can’t wait to hear what you think about it!

As always, any and all feedback is welcomed!

Thanks - I'll take a look into these

Also the fill tool for backgrounds is a bit... finicky. If I try to fill a field surrounded by streets... it sometimes works and sometimes just fills half of the town. Seems to have problems with generated streets but works for self-drawn streets, I guess. And lastly: Sometimes big filled areas can't be easily erased because they only get a single pixel that can be selected for the erase tool. Another one: Stone fences are part of the wall tool but can only be erased by the road-erasing tool.

There is a known issue where if you draw a road/wall over a road it breaks - it's supposed to snap so it splits the existing road in two, so for now just make sure everything is snapping when you intersect things. I'm looking into fixing the root cause.

Is there any place to report bugs? I think I have found one. If you edit the map and try to place to much walls at once it will not save changes. It will show a short "working" / "loading" animation instead of the tools and then go right back to the tools. Or it may be that it cannot handle drawing walls over roads? Not sure myself.
