Behind the Scenes: Campaign Mission

The Sanctuary Shattered Sun demo will include a single player campaign mission, and we wanted to give you an idea of what we have considered for inclusion as well as some insights into what we want to do. These are some of the things we have been working on:

Dialogue System

One of the key features we have been developing is a dynamic dialogue system. Not only will you be provided information by characters during your mission, but the dialogue will be interactive. You can respond to conversations with different options and the decisions you make can influence and impact the game. Your responses shape the opinion others have of you. Your reputation with other factions is affected by what you say and what you do.

Choices and Consequences

We are planning to make your decisions meaningful. Choices you make during gameplay or dialogue can have real consequences. For example, helping someone early in the campaign can have a positive impact on their opinion of you and they may come to your aid in the future.

Objectives and Progress

The objectives UI is another area which we have put a lot of effort. Our goal is to create a system which clearly shows players what needs to be achieved in the mission. Hovering over an objective icon will display a text explanation of that objective. Some objectives are optional; think primary and secondary objectives. You’ll also see objectives set out in different ways such as percentages or timers, helping you track your progress. Clicking an objective icon will zoom the camera to the objective location. Markers can also appear on the map to help you to plan your missions.

Introduction to the Lore and Game Mechanics

The demo mission will be an introduction to the game and provide an overview of the lore. We also want you to experience key mechanics, such as Shatter and Freeze. The mission is designed to give you an idea of the challenges you can expect to encounter in the full game.

I Know What Your First Question Will Be

Currently, there is not set time for the release of the demo, but rest assured you guys, our loyal patrons, will be the first to find out. Check back often for more details.

Loving your stuff, as a huge fan of RTS games its great to see efforts like yours to rebuild the genre.

Sorry, new unit was rail-gun not arty

I'm a big fan of Steven Coveys book "Principle Centered Leadership". Does the development team have a set of defined principles they use to make decisions? For instance, the decision to invest in "dynamic dialogue" (and its prioritization) might fall under a principle that favors player immersion over pure eye candy. (The new artillery unit could also meet this type of principle ... I regularly zoom in to enjoy the artillery fire and to watch bigbot destruction. ) It's probable that there isn't a formal defined vision like this and it's all flying by the seat of your pants. I ask because I am interested in stuff like this and what makes teams cohesive
