Him being a viltrumite he was trying to convince himself that humans didn't mean anything to him. He was in denial of his feelings for his family. In denial that maybe he himself was becoming human. We can see that in that flashback from season 1 episode 8 where mark was playing baseball as a kid. If that wasn't the case he wouldn't have abandoned his post, he would've just killed mark and start over like he said he would do. So him missing his wife is even more proof that he always cared about debbie.
