Sometimes you get an idea in your head and you have to spend a huge chunk of your day trying to see it through. Sometimes the idea is a character you don't know if you'll ever use and sometimes it takes you way too long to finesse a design that you think works, but in the back of your head you know you'll probably want to re-do it two days later...
