An early idea for Usonia was to make the suburb extremely blocky and modular, like it was made from prefabricated components and assembled on-site. Usonia went through so many iterations. The town square that ended up in the comic is based on production art from the Frank Capra film Lost Horizon (1937). The surrounding regions are loosely based on Frank Lloyd Wright's concepts for a utopian-style planned city in which agriculture and urbanization were equally valued.
