The tire trick works, I used to buy parts from the Volkswagen master in town who is coincidentally also a hippie / pothead. We became fast friends and come spring he would have stacks of tires for his potatoes. Just take a potato off and knock a bag out take another one off and knock them out it was pretty sweet he had rabbits and killed for meat chickens he'd kill for me and fur he was a real live off the land kind of guy crazy as a fucking bad shit rat though...

Someone else mentioned tires - growing up, my friend's father used this method. He hauled junk cars to the smelter to be turned into pipe, so he had an endless supply of old tires. What he would do is plant the potatoes, wait for the plant to come up, and when it was "one tire width tall", he'd throw a tire over it and fill it with dirt. Repeat every time the plant came up until you had a stack of half a dozen tires. When you went to harvest them, each tire was basically full of potatoes, all the way around the tire. Neighbours hated him, I think. He also did it in the front yard.
