Raycevick's Recommendations: Spirited Away

I vaguely recall my family renting this movie out of curiosity, and me being very weirded out. I can't even recall specifically why, but I can hazard a couple guesses upon seeing it now. God damn, was I robbed though, because Spirited Away is a timeless film.

It's been twenty years and there are still only a handful of movies so visually spectacular, superbly paced, or so overwhelmingly heartfelt.

Watch it.

And it's time for me to binge the rest of Miyazaki's filmography.

From the very first frame you can tell that this is going to be different from every other Miyazaki's films. The sight of knees and a bundle of flowers. A child waking from a nap. There's something about this movie that makes it feel like it's epic and small in scale at the same time. She has to return to her world and save her parents, but first she has to give a river spirit a good bath. The animation of everything in the bathhouse as well is so well done. From the frogs to the man spider working the boiler every character just fits. This one just hits a little bit different, you know?
