And I'll tell you why…
Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer.
Bioware's science fiction Trilogy + One is my favorite fictional universe. I love the planets, races, guns, biotics, tech, conflicts, politics, history, I love all of it! And yet, when it comes to any experiences beyond the core games… there's one option.
Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer wasn't remarkable in any capacity. Progression's obnoxious. Maps are samey. Gunplay's average. Objectives are annoying, enough to exploit!
But!
We got to headbutt bitches as a Krogan, hop as Quarians, and even run around as corrupted Protheans! We got to play as everything together!
Could it be better? Sure! But especially when there's no other place to do these things, I can't help but embrace everything Bioware's Montreal studio did exceedingly well. The weapon, character, and enemy variety. The sheer depth of content. And ramped up intensity compared to Single Player!
I love the original trilogy but after six playthroughs over ten years, I've seen it all. I've done every interrupt. I've completed every Side Mission. I've shot a dozen Thresher Maws. I've played and completed Pinnacle Station! Here's the comic I'm reading! This is how desperate I am to satisfy this fix!
So when I type Warhammer into Steam and there's 11 pages of games and downloadable content for said games, fuck yeah I'm jealous! Do you know how much I'd kill for a seven hour FPS of gunning down Turians in the first contact war!? Or gunning down humans as a Turian!? Fuck it. Make it three hours for all I care! I'll binge the shit out of it even if its shit, and I hate it while finding the handful of things I love!
I want Mass Effect but XCOM, Total War, Civ, Starcraft, Galactic Empire, Diablo, Titanfall, Left 4 Dead, Space Marines!
But Raycevick, some of these are 40k, and some are Age of Sigmar!
They both have Warhammer on the box, Mr. Pedantic, let me be bitter god damn it! Are all of these games great? Hell no. Lots of mediocrity and worse. And even the ones fans often praise as one of the best are just kinda alright from an outsiders view. But I'd defend the fanboys right to castrate me for that opinion, because I get it.
Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer's no better than Space Marine, and millions hold fond memories of both for the same reasons. We got to experience a universe we love in a whole new way, only Warhammer, makes that the norm, with lower budgets and more teams. This is the beauty of releasing multiple mid-market games within a universe rather than placing all bets on a single game once every three years if you're lucky, and when one fails, fire everyone, shelf the IP, and wait even longer… All of that's avoided! And you've got gameplay catering to a specific genre rather than the widest demographic possible, that's always supported by an entourage of established fans.
