Raycevick's Recommendations: Yojimbo

Akira Kurosawa, a name you've probably heard if you follow the works of Steven Spielberg or George Lucas, both were the most notable but far from the only inspired by Kurosawa's 1961 Samurai Classic, though to Westerner's like me, it'll feel like... well, a Western.

That's no mistake, as Fistful of Dollars is known to be an unofficial remake of Akira's film.

It's remarkable how much the filmmaking stands the test of time. The shots, the sets, even little moments like our lead character practicing his throwing knives. Really, the most enjoyable aspect is the lead character. Somebody who is likeable the moment he smirks at this town he's about to settle into.

Toshiro Mifune is great in the movie.... menacing but comical. Kurosawa's samurai films are great but I'm such a big fan of Ikiru and his contemporary Japanese works. I think a lot of people aren't truly aware of how many movies Kurosawa did-to put it simply: a lot. Fun fact: Martin Scorsese plays Van Gogh in "Dreams", stumbling around his own paintings while Chopin's "Raindrop-Prelude'" plays. Same "Raindrop-Prelude" that was in the Halo 3 'believe' trailers.
