The amount of mockery Michael Bay gets from viewers and critics alike I think very much stems from that he's clearly talented, and movies like The Rock show how.
The films a majestic balance of action, drama, and camp. It's got a compelling Villain lashing out against the US, a hysterically naïve character played by Nicholas Cage, and multiple action set-pieces that would set the stage for multiple video-games in the years to come.
That I'd never seen it until now and loved it, is a testament to how gracefully it's aged.
