Looking back, this whole year has been a re-awakening for my taste in music. Not so much that I've changed what I like, but that I finally understand what I previously didn't like.
Not to say I ever disliked Black Sabbath, more just that I never gave them a genuine listen. The last attempt, I kept circling back to my usual complaint of 60-70's albums regarding production. That a "Metal" band should have heavier, thicker, harsher, more distorted guitars that unlock the devil in us all.
Thing is, not everything needs to be that. The term "Metal" has expanded, evolved, and deviated into so many little sub-genres it's become a meme.
Perhaps that's why this time, when I let Vol. 4 be itself rather than what I expect out of a modern Metal album, I finally get it, and even find myself longing for it's style when the mood hits me.
P.S. HEALTH's "Decimation" from their own Vol. 4 I swore was using the melody from "The Straightener" but I've not found a single mention of it online, so perhaps I'm just going insane...
