Recommendations: Far Cry 2

One of the most obvious signs you're loving a game is when you boot it up to get 10 minutes of Footage and play for two hours.

Having played Assassin's Creed 1 & Far Cry 2 back to back, while both share issues of their ambition forcing Ubisoft Montreal to slim down their game to an infamous level of repetition, Far Cry 2 is the game that's much more dynamic, flexible, and unique in '24, due to so few games having replicated its delicate balance of approachable gameplay and commitment to its placing you in the world.

Within one firefight with jammed weapons, being rescued by a buddy, and genuinely using fire to trap a squad of enemies... I just thought...

Fuck, I miss this.

I’ve only used them together, so I don’t know which features come from which mod. Basically, bugs are fixed, weapons rebalanced somewhat, the economy is rebalanced, enemies are able to use more weapons, and the map is adjusted to make navigation more challenging. Also gives options to speed up the game’s intro and make the graphics more saturated. Definitely the way I prefer playing the game, but it’s also balanced around the highest difficulty, so I’m not sure if I would recommend it for a first-time player.

Storythyyyyyme. I grew up with Starcraft Broodwar, Mortal Kombat 3 and 4, Porsche 2000, Driver, Red-Alert 2 and the everlasting SuperDesign EndingMan BS500 (or, as we eastern europeans loved to call it, Terminator 2). There were these game rooms where we all gathered when we were 9-10-11 years old and literally spend hours every day trying to beat one of the bosses. There were times where one of us didn't have any money and they couldn't play, so we always chipped in or take turns to make sure we all had fun. Started high-school and got myself a PC and that whole game-room fad started to disappear. Following up with Mass Effect, Civilization 2 and 3, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Fifa 07, around college everything died off for me. I didn't have the time or the patience to enjoy video games. Life turned a bit sour when I had to leave for the UK cause prospects where quite crap at the time. In 2017, I went to this shop and got myself an Xbox 360 and 25 games for about 25 bucks US. Amongst the games was a badly scratched FarCry3 disc. Funny enough it ran like a dream. The moment I powered it up and played the intro, I felt this shiver in my entire body, which I will never forget to this day. I'm not saying FarCry 3 is the best game in the world, but when I played it, after not being able to play a video game for the better half of the decade, it felt like I was a kid again, defeating Reptile for the first time with Liu Kang. It was the first time I played any FarCry titles. Never have I thought that I would feel like a kid again. And no game has ever offered me that level of nostalgia, and allowed me to reminisce of my buddies so far back. For me FarCry will always be something special.

Definitely one of my favorite games. Playing this game with the Realism + Redux mods recently has been a fun experience.
