Recommendations: Harley Quinn (Season 1-2)
Added 2024-09-16 22:08:12 +0000 UTCHaving my Wisdom Teeth pulled, I was in the perfect mindset of just wanting something to let me kick back, relax, and laugh a lot throughout every episode, and Harley Quinn is one of the most unlikely successes.
I've talked before about preferring absurdist or dark humor being played straight, that characters in the world and their scenarios are taken completely seriously in the world, rather than constantly mugging for the camera... yet, the editing, voice-acting, and writing are just good enough in Harley Quinn that I couldn't help myself.
Whether its Harley's time in Arkham, Lex Luthor's Legion of Doom cancelling one of its Villains, a chain-smoking book, or the never ending ambitions of Clayface's acting, the show manages to remix DC's wacky world with enough wit and charm that binging through 26 episodes was a breeze.
As for why I'm highlighting Season's 1&2 specifically, they're both the ones conveniently available on multiple streaming services without having to use "MAX", and it's the shows high-points.
Season 3 has signs of getting lost in the sauce, but still has enough endearing moments and funny jokes to overshadow a clunky conclusion and heavier reliance on references.
Season 4 sadly falls off a cliff, to the point that I'll probably be writing about it for Friday's post... but that won't stop me from recommending this show, nor talking like Bayne for the next week.

This show was far better than I would have imagined

I agree with the sentiments on season 3, especially with the jokes holding it up more than the general writing. Season 4 feels like the writers didn’t know what to do with their conclusion for season 3 and were just meandering around different ideas that could’ve been a full season. Haven’t seen the Kite Man spin-off, and am honestly worried that it will be more of the same. Hopefully they learned their lessons for season 5
