She's having accidents because of her pregnancy and is embarrassed about the diapers the hospital put her in so she tried to take them off. The nurses weren't okay with her taking her protections off so she got mittened until further notice.

It's probably just my imagination, but I see a cerain look in the eye of the diapered patient. For she knows the nurses know their patients don't like being in diapers, so everyone in the hospital wears diapers, including the nurses. This means any visitors will be expected, forced, to let the nurses put them in diapers. So very shortly the nurses will be coming to put her visitor into something nice and padded.
