Iris goofing around! - new post

Hey everyone, since patreon support is taking forever and a half to adress this issue, I'll just re-create the post with all Iris images so it doesn't take even more time to see the images.

I'll leave the other post active for a few days, so feel free to copy/paste your comment (if you want, of course) to this one. At the end of the month I'll delete the other post so it's not confusing to anyone browsing here in the future.

1st image

Hey everyone, the first image is ready! I had a blast working on her facial expression, getting the lips right and the whole "mmleah" movement done lol. It's such a different expression, but I'm really happy with the result.

2nd image

It's funny because I thought this was going to be one of the hardest, but I'm pretty sure the 3rd one will be lol  Anyway, the idea was inspired by some images I saw with girls making this face, which around here we call it "fish face", and it was just a cool concept to work with =D

3rd image

Oh boy, talk about a hard expression to do! It was rally tricky to do, and I had to check a lot of references to get the teeth/tongue/lip area correctly, but I loved the result!

4th image

This was much easier than the previous images, but definitely interesting to do, how to make the lip interact with the hair pin and make sure she looks "adorable" lol

Overall, I have to say I loved doing this series. It was so much fun to make the expressions work and be able to draw her upclose with so many nuances and changes on her face!

------------------------

Also, I'll try something lightly different with this one, which is to post the other images in this same post, since now patreon allows for multiple images to be included. Personally I think it's better to view them as a "sequence" (which is the intention), and doesn't spam the timeline with multiple images in a row. But let me know what you think!

Hope you guys like it!

I have to say I left a loud "oh for fuck sake" , because I wrote a long response to your previous post, and when I hit enter, your post was gone (as well as my reply lol) so here's the 2nd try lol I actually thought about a character similar to iris around 10y ago. I thought about a drawing of a brunette girl with heterochomia and short messy hair where she had her face painted (Willian Wallace style) but with oposite colors from the eyes. But I never really painted that, just made a sketch, wasn't nearly as good on drawing faces, so it sucked, and I moved on. The, fast foward to when people started suggesting for me to create my own character, that girl was the first idea I had in mind. So I got hundreds of references, and started to "shape up" Iris. Which is funny because in the initial drawings, she's more "sexy" but as the drawings evolved, I mader her more "natural beauty" and made the body more believable, and the expressions and funny scenes helped give her a lot of personality and charisma. But yeah, the eyes were always there. Iris was just a fitting name after it was all done =)

These really are incredible. It's always a treat to see Iris drawn. If you ever decided to kickstart a physical art book I'm sure most of us here would part with our bank accounts if there's a hefty amount of Iris in it, lol. I tried to make a previous post but it looked buggy to me so let's hope this goes a lot better. I'd like to repeat the question I tried asking as well. Was Iris' heterochromia (her different coloured eyes) something you knew about her from the get-go, or did it come to you after? Keep up the fantastic work!

Thanks! I think it's important to make some things in the background that break the "white" a bit, so a simple line of darker tiles do wonders. Well, it's no secret now that I do like to draw lips. It's simply great to make all the little details and texture that make a lip "desirable". So playing around with the shape, motion and whatnot is a great experience =)

Lee

Thank you! I tested a slightly different method to paint the hair, and it worked very well. It's very similar to the one I often use, just a minor adjustment on how I draw the "shine" parts. It made slightly easier to give form to how ir curls and go. The face was definitely challenging to do. Full smile with teeth out is already hard enough to do, with a bit of tongue it was an extra layer of complexity, but I have to say I loved the result =D

Lee

Thanks! It was really tricky to get the idea of the hands right. Had to re-do them a few times to get the proper interaction =D It's funny because when you try to draw those poses that are more "natural" there's a lot of little details to capture. For each image there are dozens of different references to see subtle shifts in skin, muscle and how things deform. It's really great to understand what's going on =)

Lee

You are very welcome =D

Lee

they are definitely tricky. I think the hardest one are definitely smiles, It's really tricky to show teeth and full smiles without looking ... weird. The lips on image 1 and 2 were surprisingly easier, I imagine it's because since they are deformed, there's no way for people to tell "oh it wouldn't fold/squeeze like that" because lets face it, you can press and squeeze lips on a LOT of ways and they all work. But smiles don't have a lot of choices. So people know what to expect when they see a full smile. They know what happens to the face, so it's very visible when it goes wrong.

Lee

Thanks! It's great to see how she evolved as a character. The initial versions were too "sexy/perfect" so, it was great to bring more personality and identity to her =)

Lee

thanks! It's really great and challenging to work on such different expressions. I'll definitely try out some more expressions like that in the future =)

Lee

why thank you!

Lee

Great work with the facial expressions and details here Krys. Nice seeing her in these type of pictures from time to time. Thanks for sharing.

Chris Harris

damn, dude. you make so life-like expressions. it's amazing

In the third image, Iris sticking her tongue out. When I first saw the image thumbnail I immediately thought the same thing but if you view the full size image you'll realize that she is in fact sticking her tongue out and her bottom lip is not swollen or disproportionate.

Tucker Mapes

Very nice set of work. But the third picture is simply monstrously disproportionate lips and teeth, it is subjective of course

Nimonys

You've brought life into Iris with every drawing you've made of her and i feel like these showcase that perfectly. Its refreshing to see someone acting like a goofball.

Now I'm not much of an artist, but I have no doubt that these kind of expressions are much harder to pull off. I think you did so convincingly and I'm thoroughly impressed. It reminds me of an analysis of the POP/STARS music video, where they noted that animators avoid exaggerated facial expressions because they can easily look weird, and how they got around that by using the animated mask. I imagine digital painting is a little different, but it's still rare to see these kind of expressions. More, please!

Thanks! Unfortunately this kind of variant doesn't really work that way. Whenever I make a drawing, I think about the scene and possible variants that make sense for such scene. And those are already considered on the amount of hours available for each project. For this one, there will be a nsfw version, but it's simply towel/no towel. Since it's a 4 image project, this already takes significantly more time than a regular pin-up. Adding another variant that's not part of the initial image is just not possible, specially considering it has to be done in 4 images. So, unfortunately this is not the kind of thing I can add on the fly.

Lee

Very good work!-a see through version or a wet tshirt version were also great.maybe some users wanna see her boobies =) .is this possible?

Mr.T

Hoo boy, image 3 was the one I was looking forward to most to see how you'd handle the expression and you definitely don't disappoint! I absolutely love seeing Iris with her hair down and the way the strands all sweep over and around her head, with messy strands falling all around her face and twisting and curling about her shoulders is all just so cute, fun and sexy. And as always, the hair is insanely well painted and detailed! The rendering for her body with all the movement of her arms is terrific too, I really like the central dip her chest thanks to her shoulders moving out, with all the plane changes there and for her collarbone looking great. And the clear divide and contrast in light and dark tones that define her right arm is wonderfully striking, with her hand and fingers being so nicely detailed. The other arm too and how her pec and deltoid connect is fantastic as well. And then lastly there's that face! She's just so full of detail and so realistic, it's like looking at a greyscale photo of a real person! The sheer level of detail in her irises, the creases in the skin around her eyes, all the freckles ad well as the textures of her tongue are all just pure excellence! And she just looks so fricking cute! That smile is infectious, her eyes are so captivating and I just love her round adorable nose 😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻 Brilliant work once again with this series! Definitely eager to see the final entry (And seriously, Iris is so beautiful with her hair let down 😻😻😻)

Oooh, I didn't realise that all four of these would be full sized images! Oh this is even better 😻😻😻 Well firstly, I really like the context you added here with Iris just playing around in her bathroom in the mirror. And secondly, the background looks great with the subtle textures and tone changes in the large tiles and all of the wall has a tonne of detail. As for Iris herself, the expression is just perfect! 😹😻 She looks so adorable with her wide eyes, beautiful round nose and the terrific detail and texture to her lips, particularly the bottom one with the creases and tone changes as it bends and squishes in on itself. The hair is as exquisitely detailed as always in your work and I adore all the strands splitting off and curling all around her. The texture of her skin is wonderful and the freckles all over her just make her extra cute and her eyes are so captivating with a gorgeous shine. And I just can't get over her round, lovable nose and the insane detail of her lips. Her body looks fantastic too with such an appealing painterly feel to the rendering, her neck, collarbone and shoulder in particular are fantastic with all the plane changes and bumps and areas where the skin sinks down, like between her neck and collarbone. The forearm with the twisting muscles underneath and the definition of her hand are all so well done too. And lastly, I really like the towel with it's soft and fluffy texture as well as the soft folds in the material. Beautiful work! I'm very excited to see all the rest of the series, especially the 3rd one with the big smile and falling hair 😻

CiarΓ‘n M

Oh, this is a pretty good idea, keeping images from the same series to the one post, I like it! I also really, really like this painting! 😻😻😻😻😻 The expression on Iris' face is just too precious and you did an excellent job in painting it, the way her fingers indent into her cheeks, pushing the skin inwards and causing the creases near her lips and under her chin is all excellent. Her eyes continue to be captivatingly beautiful and I just adore the shine in her irises and once again, the lips are so insanely detailed with the little ridges in their textures, the shine that runs across the bottom lips is quite striking too. I also really like the deep occlusion shadows where her fingers touch her cheeks, as well as in the deep fold for her chin. And just like last time, the hair is so absurdly intricate and fantastic with the separation between groups of strands as they wrap over and around towards the back of her head, I especially like the fringe with that one group that falls to the side and lands between her eye and ear. Her hands and arms are exquisitely done too with very subtle and gentle lighting/tones that still define the plane changes so well. I can't help but love her fingers and knuckles, as well as the little dark tones that run through her hands, the darker shadows on the insides of her lower forearms look so good too and really show off the larger plane change. Brilliant work once again! (Oh and her ears are wonderfully detailed too!) πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Beautiful follow up to the first painting and I'm very eager for #3, to see her big grinning smile and her hair get let down 😻😻😻

thank you! I have to say, those series require a bit more work than the usual pin-ups but I really like to do them from time to time. It allows me to tell a "small story", when sometimes a single image might not convey. When I first thought about the series, it was initially meant as a "photobooth" section, but changed to a bathroom/mirror scene because I wanted to have something with the hair pin, shoulders visible etc. I had literally a hundred or so images of references from selfies, "cute shots" and all sorts of different facial expressions, so it was really tricky to settle on just 4. While each individual image took somewhere around 6-7h to be completed, I spent a full day work just sketching out the poses, trying out different ideas and mix matching them to make expressions that worked. And I think it's great to work on this way. I initially thought about this series a good 6 months ago, but I wasn't quite "there" yet in terms of skill to pull of those kind of expressions. Because the body nowadays is somewhat easier for me to do, but I knew from the start that the expressions had to be perfect or the series wouldn't work. And I did consider for the bathroom wall to have more stuff behind her (like shelves, furniture or whatever) but when I made the initial sketch it was just too much noise and it could add an unecessary amount of detail to the background. And since the images were not colored, it could bring issues with contrast and such, and this way, with a clear background her silhouette is very distinct and readable. So yeah, it's great when you see all the parts of the process that happen to make sure the images work. I really really liked the result. And well, personally I don't mind copying the comments, because the other post will be deleted soon. And even some time from now it's great to see what people thought about it.

Ah, this 4th entry is absolutely precious and a lovely way to end off the series! I love her how her hair styled here, pulled back on one side and allowed to cascade over her shoulder on the other, while I also find the fringe curling over her face to be so appealing. I also really like the spot above her left eye where the here is pulled back and sweeps over her head, the lighter tones of that section of hair also make it stand out against the darker areas elsewhere. The level of detail in all of the curling, twisting and meandering strands that fall over her shoulder is excellent too. The rendering and detail of all the anatomy of her neck and collarbone is excellent too, as is how all those areas interact, with the left shoulder coming forward and rising up, pulling the collarbone up with it. The smooth gradients of tone that run down her left arm and define the turning muscles look marvellous too and I like the more subtle definition in the centre of her chest where the skin sinks inwards into the centre of her breasts. And as always, the fluffy texture of the towel and rendering of the folds looks great! And last but definitely not least is that face! Iris continues to look utterly precious. The wide open eyes with the irises/pupils coyly turned away is just adorable and the texture and detail of the irises with the shiny spots on them are so very eye-catching! Likewise, the lips have so much detail and texture with the shine on them making them look extra appealing. The rendering of all of the plane changes around her eye-sockets, nose, cheeks, chin and area around her mouth as well as how all of those movements connect is very impressive too! You've done a fantastic job with this series! Always a pleasure to see more Iris (I'm actually using one of your previous Iris images from the series where she's in bed as a wallpaper on my PS4 😹😻) and it was a lot of fun seeing her silly, cutesy expressions as well as the progression of her hair and movements of her arms/shoulders. (I'm a little hesitant to copy over my previous comments to this post since they're all pretty long and might clutter up this comment section... though I guess that would've happened anyway on the previous post. Well... we'll see! πŸ˜…)
