Demon City Shinjuku
SoC fave Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, Cyber City Oedo 808, parts of The Animatrix) helmed this extremely derivative but fun fantasy horror about an evil sorcerer who takes over Shinjuku with sights on unleashing demons on the whole world. There’s plenty of gorgeously animated fights and fun monster designs, plus some uh… ‘borrowed’ plot elements from Star Wars and Escape From New York.
Leda: The Fantastic Adventures of Yohko
A very early isekai, but with fun 80s cheesiness, and a plot kicked off by a stolen Walkman. Full of weird creatures, big action set pieces, and bikini armor. Will definetly give you similar vibes to 80s/90s JRPGs.
Dragon’s Heaven/Outlanders
We’d do this as a double feature of two 80s OVAs that would be too short to feature on their own. Dragon’s Heaven is using a very Moebius style look to tell a story about a fantasy world with mechs. Outlanders is a horny, goofy sci-fi yarn about a normal guy who gets taken away by an alien warrior woman for fun and adventure.
