Dazed and Confused
A hangout movie if there ever was one. Its the last day of high school in Austin, Texas, and the year is 1976. From Richard Linklater, who a decade later made School of Rock. A true cult classic; it bombed in theaters, then became a sleeper hit on video.
Real Women Have Curves
America Ferrera stars as Ana, an east LA high school student struggling not only with keeping her family together financially, but planning for college and dealing with body image issues. A crowd pleasing indie hit of the early 00s, which inspired a whole generation of filmmakers.
Boyz in the Hood
A coming of age story in early 90s south central LA, as teens try to grapple with a world in which there is no future. The late, great John Singleton’s directorial debut, with breakout roles for Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, and Nia Long, and great performances from veteran actors Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.
