The Place Promised in Our Early Days Makoto Shinkai’s debut feature imagines an alternate history Japan that has been divided in two, similar to Cold War Germany or current day Korea. Three childhood friends obsessed with a mysterious tower on the other side of their part of Japan strive to reach it somehow, and one of them seems to have a lingering unconscious connection with the mysterious structure. I remember really liking this one back in the day, but it has been at least a decade since I last saw it.
