Barbarella
Knowingly silly early comic book adaptation about the adventures of space traveler Barbarella (Jane Fonda) trying to find a missing scientist by the name of Durand Durand who has created a doomsday weapon. Extravagantly produced by Dino De Laurentiis, and directed by Fonda’s then husband Roger Vadim. Full of lavish sets, sexual innuendo, and bouncy 60s pop music.
Europa Report
The story of the first crewed mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa and attempts to find life. The story is told through found footage, a unique way to show the horrors and emptiness of space. Also manages to create some great visuals despite the limitations of the found footage conceit.
The Martian
Ridley Scott directs Matt Damon as an astronaut left behind on Mars who must survive on his own, while on Earth a team of astronauts plans his rescue. Takes a lot of the trademarks of a wilderness survival story but applies them to Mars as a fun twist. Are there David Bowie needle drops? Of course there are.
