I remember learning from "Lies My Teacher Told Me" that a lot of the names that Americans used for NA often were just taken from other tribes, and sometimes those names weren't exactly meant to be "endearing" we should say.

In my case, the book I initially learned about them from used the word no different than it did actual Native American tribe names, and I didn’t hear anything indicating different until a couple years ago.
