Katseye - Popstar Academy Documentary ep 5

Well, That was a surprise. I feel like we are starting to see very clearly the narrative Hybe and Geffen want, by omitting certain parts and trying to promote others. Obviously telling the girls at short notice that it's a survival show was wrong so they didn't show us the initial fallout and kept trying to defend their actions.

Though I am grateful that they are showing us things that we can disagree with, there's a lot lol.

Now the whole Manon situation thing. The downside of it all is that Sophia, Lara and Manon got so much hate (painted as mean girls or lazy girl) after the documentary and two months into their debut idk if that was the best decision bc people based their whole opinion on little clips they saw on tiktok. I personally think that in general the whole situation was amplified for views and you can see that Geffen really wanted to do that. People forgot that Manon was scouted on instagram/tiktok (she was a bit famous on tiktok and she was THE pinterest girl), and the girls knew that. So i feel like from the get-go it was a bit of a slap in the face bc this girl w/no prior knowledge of dancing nor singing professionally was randomly scouted and trained for some months in her home country bc they absolutely wanted her bc let's be for real she is incredibly gorgeous and they saw star quality. But all the other girls (exept Lara she was also scouted) auditionned bc they wanted this so badly, this is their dream and they have been working on it basically their whole life (dance classes, singing lessons...). Manon probably felt insecure and tried to avoid being in that atmosphere where people probably wondered why she was here. I'm not saying that the other girls purposely made her uncomfortable but when you don't live with them, you're missing rehersals and Manon is a bit introverted at first well naturally she would be a bit left out. Now the whole living with her aunt/breaking curfew. I find that section a bit ridiculous bc Manon was already a grown woman at that moment I think she was like why in the world do i have a curfew I'm a full grown person, most of the girls were minors and didn't really had friends in LA ofc they wouldn't go out late partying/drinking like Manon would. And also Lara didn't live w/the girls either, they never mentionned it in the documentary (although it was pretty obvious) but she has this huge ass mansion in LA why would she live in the dorms w/18 other girls lol. I'm sure if any other contestant had family/friends like Lara and Manon living in LA they would have lived w/them and it's okay. Manon's dedication for this project was poor at the beggining let's be real and I personnally really get the girls' frustration especially bc Sophia talked to her about it before and thing didn't change sooo yeah. The thing is in Europe and especially in Switzerland we don't have this work till your bones crack kind of ethic, for us it's okay to take a day off, to prioritize mental health etc so big culture shock for her and imagine never dancing before and you have to put your body through 8 hours/day randomly one day. I think Manon locked in when they went public bc she saw that she had people behind her and also they went to korea, no time for going out or doing other things she didn't know anyone there so no other choice than giving your everything. Now the girls for me didn't really do the right thing when it comes to her obviously bc they were frustrated which is fair. Lara's statement about Manon at the time was sorry but only the harsh truth bc at that time people only saw like the trailer film/introduction and mission 1 where she had like two lines so it was not based on talent but really bc of how pretty she was. But also it's a bit hypocrite bc all of them have pretty privilege (especially Lara girl you were scouted for your talent and bc you are a baddie) otherwise they wouldn't be in this program bc there is no way that out of 120 000 applicants they weren't more talented young women than all of them. And also unfortunately some of them who had "less" beauty privilege ranked low like Emily despite her talent and Adela people hated her looks (not my opinion, im so sad our society is based on looks that much but let's be real entertainement especially kpop are based a lot on visuals). I think Daniela was the realest in this competition, she was really focus on herself and she saw that Manon was clearly favored by the public and by hybe (especially Son he loved her down), she probably had a feeling that she was going to be in the group so she was like let's be friends, girl you need to lock in and that's it. The others like Sophia and Lara (they basically knew they were in the group too) cared too much about their favorite friends (which is human) and tried to really help them debut which is nice but you're also here for yourself so make friends w/everyone including Manon so that in the end you can still say you debuted w/your friend instead of giving dirty looks or whatever bc it was clear that she was not going anywhere. But again I understand their feelings. I'm so glad Manon debuted and people who are saying that she didn't deserve to debut are so dumb bc like she locked in and maybe she didn't come a lot in rehersals at times but she was still good and had the star quality that is not taught unfortunately. Lara and Sophia are not the mean girls people want them to be either they were just young girls in a very stressfull environnement being frustrated. They all get along well now and that's what matter really. As you probably saw by now is that they dragged the whole Manon situation for like three episodes and it's like so tiring for nothing, I get that she's in the group so she was gonna get a good amount of screen time but like where is Yoonchae? Where are the stories of so many of the contestants? I'm sorry for this rant, I had a lot on my chest hahaha

Okay im ready to comment. First of all I think it's a bit messed up that they didn't tell the girls that they would end up in a survival show bc not everybody is comfortable with that kind of thing and maybe they wouldn't have joined the program at all if they knew. But also they knew that this program's goal was to make a group so they would eventually be in the public eye and I think the survival show was a "good training" for that bc unfortunately with fame comes haters so better to see that and "prepare/strenghten" your heart before you're tied to a contract for like seven years. Also maybe the bond that they created wouldn't have been genuine if they knew from the get-go that they would be against each other through a competition.
