Whoever told you that you don't need to know about the Elite Four and not to worry about it needs to be slapped silly. Like your chat is usually saying a lot of really painfully wrong things, but that one just took the cake. The Elite Four are the top strongest trainers in the region who have all won their respective Pokemon Leagues. And then there is the Champion of them. Once you win a league, you battle against the Elite Four and then the Champion. That's who Lance is. That's why he's busted. He is literally a Pokemon Champion, one of the top Pokemon trainers in the world. It's also important to note that Kanto and Johto share the same Elite Four and Champion, since they are interconnected.
