Shoes (2020)

Adam had been lounging on the couch in Jim's apartment, waiting for his friend to finish getting ready. The two of them had planned a day out, and Adam was looking forward to it. Jim had excused himself to the bathroom to brush his teeth and style his hair, leaving Adam to relax in the living room.

Suddenly, without warning, Adam felt a strange sensation wash over him. His vision blurred, and the world around him seemed to expand at an alarming rate. His heart raced as he realized he was shrinking.

"What the...?" Adam muttered, watching the coffee table and the couch grow taller and taller.

Panic set in, and Adam struggled to his feet. He had to get Jim's attention before it was too late. He started to run towards the bathroom, but with every step, the floor seemed to stretch further and further away. The walls of the room grew higher, and the furniture became massive obstacles.

"Jim! Jim, help!" Adam shouted, but his voice was barely a squeak now.

He stumbled, his legs growing weaker as he continued to shrink. The hardwood floor, which had once felt smooth underfoot, now felt like an endless expanse.

Desperation surged through Adam as he kept moving towards the bathroom, but his body was shrinking too fast. He looked around, disoriented, and saw Jim's sneakers casually placed near the couch. They loomed over him, now appearing as colossal mountains of fabric and rubber. Each lace was as thick as his arm, and the soles were like towering walls.

He staggered towards the shoes, hoping that Jim might notice him if he was near them. But by the time he reached them, he was no bigger than a bug. The smell of worn fabric and rubber hit him, strong and overpowering. He collapsed on the floor next to the sneakers, gasping for breath, as the shrinking finally stopped.

From his minuscule perspective, the sneakers were impossibly huge. The toe section alone was like a vast cavern, and the worn texture of the sole beneath him felt like a rough, uneven terrain. Adam looked up in despair, realizing just how small and insignificant he had become.

Just then, the ground trembled, and Adam felt the vibrations of Jim’s footsteps approaching. He looked up to see Jim, now an enormous giant, walking back into the living room. Jim hummed to himself, completely oblivious to Adam's predicament.

"Jim! Down here! Please, look down!" Adam screamed, waving his arms frantically. But his voice was too tiny to be heard, lost in the vastness of the room.

Jim stopped and looked around, puzzled. "Adam?" he called out, glancing around the apartment. "Where did you go?"

Jim checked the bathroom, then the kitchen, growing increasingly confused. He scratched his head, thinking. "Maybe he stepped out for a second," he muttered to himself. "He probably went downstairs to get something."

Jim picked up his sneakers, ready to put them on. Adam watched in horror as the enormous hand lifted one of the shoes, the air pressure from the movement knocking him off his feet. He scrambled to stand, but it was too late. Jim didn't even glance in his direction as he slipped his foot into the sneaker.

"Jim, no! I'm here!" Adam shouted, but his cries were swallowed by the immense space around him.

Jim lifted his foot to put on his sneakers, and Adam saw the massive sole hovering above him. The bottom of Jim's foot was like a ceiling, and Adam could see every detail of the treads on the sole. He watched, frozen in terror, as the giant foot slipped into the sneaker.

Jim then placed his foot down firmly on the ground to put on the other shoe. The impact sent a shockwave through the floor, and Adam was thrown to the ground. The foot landed dangerously close to him, nearly stomping on his tiny form. The force of the landing made the ground tremble, and Adam could feel the air pressure shift around him.

Jim, still unaware of Adam's plight, grabbed his other sneaker and slipped it on. He stood up, adjusting the shoes on his feet. The ground trembled with each step as he grabbed his keys and wallet, preparing to leave the apartment. "I'll just wait for him outside," Jim said to himself. "He can't be far."

As the door closed behind Jim, Adam was left alone in the vast, empty apartment. The realization of his new, minuscule existence sank in, and he knew he had to find a way to survive until Jim returned. But for now, he was just a tiny, helpless speck in a world that had suddenly become overwhelmingly large.
