Dev Journal: Character Design Practice

    The other day, I figured out a better way to approach character designs. Up until now, all my designs have been done entirely through black and white sketches with any colors coming in at the end. The thing about that is, not only does that mean I wasn't designing with color in mind, it was very time-consuming for me to figure out the pose and what form I wanted the design to take. It also meant most often Don was the one who had to put in the work trying to figure out what colors would look best.

    With these designs, I was trying out a new method where I leave lines until the end and instead block the entire design in with color. And it works so much better. Not just is it faster, but I feel like I get better results too since it's much easier to see what I'm doing. I've never looked at how the real pros do it, but this has to be closer than what I was doing before.

    Anyway here are a couple WIP designs! I didn't make them with any plan in mind, so they don't have any solid character behind them yet, but they may or may not end up in the game soon depending on how things go. What I'd like to try is to go straight from these (or a cleaned up version of these) to rendering and see how many steps I can skip in-between. Maybe that way, I can speed up my art process even without necessarily being able to draw faster.

General Update:
    
I said before my goal for this update was to get it out in time for MH Wilds release, which means as per usual it's probably going to come out a little while afterwards. I don't have a firm date, but next week seems to be a fair bet. As a heads-up/reminder, this update will NOT feature any new characters, but the one after it will feature at least 2 new NPCs and potentially some new units as well. Basically, the work for those characters is already partially done, they'll just be getting their own update. Thank you so much for your support, and I can't wait to hunt with you!

Yeah, I'm sorry about that! While I am doing my best to speed it up, I don't want anyone to support if they aren't happy with what they're getting. If you're unhappy with the speed but still want to support the game, I would genuinely recommend canceling your pledge in between updates so you aren't spending more money than you want to. I really appreciate any support you've given so far!

While the first design is well made. I’m a huge fan of the seconds body type/energy she gives off. I’m a big fan of this color block style, it almost looks like card art or something that would show up in an art book.
