Dev Journal: Everything in Moderation
Added 2025-05-20 02:47:59 +0000 UTCWell, as you can see the build's still not done yet, but I wanted to go back to doing a regular post this week anyhow. If you're wondering where it is, I realized I've been getting bogged down by perfectionism again, so I've been thinking about what I can do to stop that from happening. I mean, I like being a perfectionist and it's always a quality I like seeing in other people, but it is NOT a good fit for game dev. Good way of self-improvement? Yes. Consistent and on-time production? Hell no. It's really a job where you have to focus on the forest, not on if every leaf on every tree has the correct shade of green.
It seems to happen whenever I try to draw something polished, I actually had the same thing happen with Avalon both when I drew her original art and her WG, so I want to figure out a way to change my mindset. And the best way to do that, I think, is exposure therapy. I'm thinking what I'll do next is pick a (new) design I don't care that much about and give myself a strict time limit to complete her, then post her here and see if she's game-worthy. If she is, great, we've got a new character and I know I can complete one in that time. If not, great, I know what the standard is and what I should aim for. Either way, I'm gonna put in some work getting to a place of "Eh, good enough."
Of course, I still need to complete this build first. Thank you so much for all of your support, I'll be getting back to it!

Ah, yes. Perfectionism. Artists and Game Devs struggle with that a lot and considering you're taking the role of both, it's no wonder that you would end up facing that too. It takes some getting used to, not wanting to make every pixel have the correct shade. You just gotta come to realize at what point exactly, you start getting diminishing returns. You'll get a good balance of quality and quantity down eventually, i believe.

Since the game is still in development, what you see now as perfect may not be the case as the project continues. I personally suffered a lot of stress when I have to destroy and rebuild a "perfect" creation. So I would suggest you to release a beta version before perfecting it. That's what the beta release is for. Perfection can be left until the actual release or even DLCs.
