Joss was very unhappy with the final movie so later he got to do the TV show like his original ideas. You can see Joss making fun of the movie in the first episode with lines like, Buffy: I looked around but as soon as they got clear of the graveyard they could've just voom... Xander: They can fly? Buffy: They can drive.
