I hadn't realized that's what she was doing! And yeah, you're probably right. I guess I'm not used to seeing it portrayed.

Her mimicry was impressive enough, at least for the purposes of the show, to confuse Badger into believing she was someone from his homestead. The planet we live in right now is full of technologically modernized societies with all manner of ancient customs. Some even have slavery alongside iPhones. I mean, most of our tech is made using raw materials stolen from indigenous populations where the thieves use that same indigenous population as slave labor. The world of Firefly is really just a reflection of our own, but in space. Most future dystopic shows are really just mirroring the world we already live in. Just have to live in the wrong place, and/or be the "wrong" type of person to experience it in the world we live in.
