Oh you're right for the knife, makes sense. I didn't even notice she was coming for the design of the shirt. I didn't even know they were called Blue Sun! Wow, so many easter eggs that I missed.

2023-12-10 15:17:37 +0000 UTCWhen River takes a knife to Jayne, she really wasn't after Jayne. This goes back in part to her tearing of labels during the Shindig episode. The real big bad in this series is the Blue Sun Corporation. Blue Sun makes everything from canned food, coffee, oaty bars and t-shirts. The "Blue Hand Guys" are not just guys who wear blue gloves, but literally hands/operatives of the Blue Sun Corporation. Blue Sun is such a mega-corporation that it is more powerful than the Alliance government. It was very likely that the Blue Sun Corporation was responsible for the Institute that experimented on River. People do not matter, only what is best for the corporation matters. That is why they so casually did what they did to the Alliance officers. The logo has been in the background for most of the series. For example, in the pilot episode when Jayne is on Persephone saying "nothin', into nothin', let me do the math", there is a Blue Sun logo in the background. In Shindig when River tears off the can food labels, the hidden reason is that they had a Blue Sun logo (Remember Book saying that the crew would have a few "mystery meals"). The thought of the Blue Sun corporation set her off. So if you re-watch the scene where River slashes at Jayne...notice the t-shirt he is wearing. It is a shirt featuring the Blue Sun logo. The reason for River's attack on Jayne is further hinted at when Jayne tells Simon, "you owe me a shirt". Like so many other things, it is so awful that the Firefly series did not have a chance to explore this element of their 'verse.

Couple of Easter eggs in there too, the part wash throws that hits the shuttle, was the part in the last episode that broke that Kaylee has been complaining about since the pilot, some nice irony. I believe river was recruited, remember back in the pilot he talked about a special academy, and how she was so gifted so seems like they reached out to attract her to them. It's an overlooked detail but despite jaynes betrayal, he undergoes massive character development, that moment of shame that convinced Mal he was worth saving after all is huge for him, given up till now even in this episode even his 1 and only priority is him.
