This implies that Jhiera and the other refugees have assimilated into society, perhaps due to Angel warning the males of their world to stay away. When you get bit by a vampire and it turns you, you die and a demon sets up shop in your old house. And it walks, talks, and remembers your life, but it's not you. When you see your friend as a vampire, you do not see your friend you see the thing that killed him.
