While they wanted Nicholson back he didn't want to come back for the sequel. Henry Thomas is playing Jack instead.
And It is very much a SEQUEL. While everyone’s recast but it’s still the same characters - ie Henry Thomas looks like Jack Nicholson in it, the Overlook is still standing in it, the same ghosts are in it, the same music is in it.

Makes total sense anyway. The amount of CGI work to De-age Nicholson would be VERY costly and tbh, casting a new actor that Flanagan is already familiar with, shows that he can clearly bring the role of Torrance to life - Any word on a trailer yet?
