character, Zoe, is a hypochondriac, made so by her mother's Munchausen by proxy syndrome., Zoe often has symptoms of some new disease, so when she first finds wires coming out of her skin, she thinks it's another false alarm. But what she, and we, will leam is that the wires are indeed real, and it's the start of an alien takeover of humanity, via artificial intelligence.
