Logline: The memoir of a young woman from Texas who dreamed of being a fighter pilot and struggled through a male-dominated military to reach the top of her field.

Our heroine, an Air Force Major with a Purple Heart who has overcome adversity, but never thought of herself as disadvantaged or lesser due to her gender. MJ has always dreamed of flying, and in her 30s after languishing in a loveless marriage to a pilot, she finally gets her wings and finds the job
she was born for. MJ is calm under pressure, resilient, and fiercely determined. However, she can be stubborn, and doesn't work well with others. MJ's determination leaves her with a narrow, self-serving scope at times. When she's first approached by the ACLU to be a plaintiff, she turns them down, unable to see beyond her own plight. Physically, MJ has "purposeful eyes" and is pretty despite the fact that "she doesn't pay much thought to being pretty."

MJ's closest brother-in-arms, though their relationship begins with animosity as MJ pushes away Zeke, assuming he wants something from her. Zeke is a genuinely compassionate person, "corn-fed, earnest and calm," and a little overweight. He's a voice of humor, and often flirts with MJ. There may's a spark there, at least on his end, though it's never consummated.

MJ's second husband, the love of her life, a "heartful sort of alt-punk poet" who she meets at a bar after she gets into a brawl. Brandon has his own rocky past, with an drug-addled ex-wife and two kids, but he's willing to sacrifice anything to make it work with MJ, who is his perfect compliment.

Supporting Female (14)
Brandon's daughter, a fierce but vulnerable teenager who finds.a strong rolemodel in MJ. Yellow decides she wants to join the Marines, but her world is shattered when she realizes that women are not allowed to be deployed.

MJ's commanding officer in Afghanistan. "Smart and miserable," the sort of "fast-talking Academy prodigy that smokes Pall Malls and reads Homer." Curry warns MJ that he'll be making no exceptions for her.

BLACK. "A wiry African American from Detroit" and one of MJ's fellow pilots and friends from Air Force training. He has a friendly, good-natured sense of humor.

"A scrappy Southern boy with a trim mustache" who harbors his own complex misogyny and takes an instant dislike to MJ. He's "calculating" and, unfortunately, one of the best pilots.

MJ's airforce bootcamp instructor. Always wearing aviators, he's "anchor-jawed" and his "greatest regret in life is having missed every armed conflict we ever faced." However, when Lim actually tastes battle, it turns out he doesn't have the stomach
for it.

MJ's older "auburn"-haired sister. Sarah's always been the soft one, and it's no surprise when she settles down with kids as is a "well-kept housewife." She thinks MJ needs to get her own life
together.
