DIE HARD (1988) | FIRST TIME WATCHING | MOVIE REACTION

The whole 'Is it a Christmas movie?' is purely subjective and cannot be definitively answered. The measure of whether Christmas is a character within the movie is fine, but I would add that Christmas being a character OUTSIDE the movie is equally important. I am in my late 50s and remember the days of only 3 channels when you had to WAIT to see your favorite movie or shows. Every major holiday, stations would show classics like 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Willy Wonka' and 'The Sound of Music'. None of these have anything to do with Christmas within them, yet I consider them to be Christmas movies because I associate them with, and watch them every Christmas. Do I only watch them at Christmas? No. But, then I also watch 'Miracle on 34th Street' 'A Christmas Carol' (any version) and 'It's a Wonderful Life' at other times of the year as well. Any movie can be a Christmas movie if it part of your traditions. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Period. The "debate" has taken on a life of its own, primarily because certain people want to argue just for the sake of arguing. Truth is, whatever question there may have been once upon a time over Die Hard as a Christmas movie was settled a LONG time ago. For one, the screenwriter said so himself, as did the director. But mainly it is because millions of people watch Die Hard around the holidays, including our family as the traditional Christmas Eve movie since 1995 (never missed a year). Google "Best Christmas movies" and I guarantee Die Hard will be in the top 20 (usually top 10) of EVERY SINGLE LIST! No joke, as I have done it myself. Declaring it not a Christmas movie means that literally every group, including those specifically in the movie business, are wrong. That is ridiculous, and arrogant. When a movie becomes an established standard in a pop culture category, the "debate" comes down to a single person's personal choice. Die Hard doesn't have to be on a person's Christmas viewing preference list, but that doesn't change the reality that it IS a Christmas movie. Personally, I've never liked A Christmas Story so it would not be on MY compiled Christmas movie list, yet I'd never dream of proclaiming that excludes it from the entire category! For more proof, Google "what makes Die Hard a Christmas movie" for pages of articles written on the thematic elements and more that qualify it as a proper holiday movie. Hint: being appropriate for the kiddos isn't a valid reason as both Its a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol are traumatic, very adult themed, and borderline horror. Furthermore, I bet not a single person who vociferously makes the "not a Christmas movie!" proclamation could give one valid disqualifying factor. It's annoying, but in the end the handful of naysayers are growing smaller because every year the feigned "debate" leads more people to watch Die Hard, and inevitably they agree that it IS 100% a Christmas movie. Truth wins out in the end, so thanks to those who keep the lame "debate" going!
