Wow, the movie that told young women that to achieve your dreams first you must sleep with your boss!

I agree Johnathan not one I would have picked boring story line. I would have choose Hair Spray for a dance movie . ( Music and dance I know both would love) topics of the day . The new version has so many top stars in it. Travolta, Effron, Walkin , Phiffer, and Latefa I was for sure they would do it.

I do agree about the music but I would say the story line was boring love Story.I was surprised that Amber would want to watch it for the fact of sexual content in it. She didn't like the topic of sex in Saturday night fever. Kinda of a toned down one in Flashdance, but frankly main character slept with her boss . Big deal. Come on she brought it on through the whole movie.Sorry my opion. No sequel for it Beele said no way.

It’s hard to believe this movie is 40 years old. I remember the songs “Maniac” and “Flashdance (What A Feeling)” being huge hits. There was another actress up for the part of Alex named Krista Errickson, but the producers went with Jennifer Beals who was largely unknown at the time. This movie made her a star. She’s terrific and very beautiful.

Just finished watching the YT reaction to Flashdance. There's no Flashdance 2, but Jennifer Beales was in a movie with Sting from The Police called The Bride. Sting plays Dr. Frankenstein and Jennifer Beales plays the bride he makes.

Jay digs his tunes, and this soundtrack has some bangers on it, so I'm not overly surprised he had a good time with it. But I will agree with him that that strobe light was a little much. As for Saturday Night Fever... love the soundtrack, even more than the Flashdance one, but... when it comes to watching the whole of one movie or the other, Flashdance would be the easy pick for me. So I guess I get Amber's point of view.

Yes, the 80's version of Footloose!
Tremors would be fun too.

Ah, Footloose. Another big MTV inspired title. If so, skip the pointless 2011 remake and go for mainline 80's music and dance of original. A powerhouse of a soundtrack on that one, as well. And probably the film most responsible for making Kevin Bacon an A-list star. But personally, the Kevin Bacon flick I really want to see them watch is Tremors.
Thanks for plugging Spinal Tap, so I didn't have to again. 😁 Though I suppose this reply counts as plugging it again. 🤔

This is reminding me of Footloose which is another really good music/dance movie to watch. On the straight music front, the mockumentary Spinal Tap is worth a watch. Lots of laughs, super funny.

This movie followed the trend started by Saturday Night Fever of dropping a soundtrack for a film weeks ahead of its release to try to get some hits on the radio to promote the film. They ended up generating quite a number of hits from it, and the film made some big bucks, so I guess it worked. Maybe too well, as it tends to be cherished more fondly than the film itself. I just don't think it's a good sign when the soundtrack or score is way more memorable than the actual movie. I consider that the case for Saturday Night Fever, Chariots of Fire, and this film.
But more than that, I see it as the first film to successfully capitalize on the newly popular music video and MTV. Whole sections of the film were re-purposed for the official music videos, and there are song & dance routines and extended montages that (IMHO) overstay their welcome by lasting way longer than any dramatic function needs them to because they're stopping the narrative for a music video. Prince's film Purple Rain would do it again the following year.
That said, however, the music videos are pretty poppin'. I recently had to revisit this title for my job, and was really impressed with the cinematography by Donald Peterman who's got a solid resume overall, but I think had more opportunity to show off, have fun and play with this than a lot of his other work allowed.
I think I was in 8th grade when all the girls at school were suddenly wearing leg warmers. And over their jeans, rather than dance tights. Never really got it. But then again, since it was a fashion fad that disappeared about 5 minutes after it started, I'm guessing I'm not the only one who found the whole thing more than a little dumb.
Also, since I pretty regularly suggest you watch The Full Monty, you can now do so and not have anything spoiled for you when the guys in that movie watch Flashdance for technique and ideas for their own dance routines (but somehow end up talking more about welding.) Something to consider when you need a break from the kids entertainment.

What’s wrong with “Flashdance”? It’s a very good movie. Great soundtrack, too.

Not a movie I would have picked for Jordon to have to watch. Leg Warmers were the socks. Flash dance she is a Welder, and a stripper. I am surprised Amber you would watch it. You didn't like Saturday Night Fever to well. I don't think there was a flash dance two. The women on the movie didn't actually dance in some of the scenes Marine Jahan was Jennifer Beale' s dancer and the ( Alex's) leap through the air in the audition scene was done by gymnast Sharon Shapiro and the break-dancing was done by Crazy Legs.So she didn't dance in it, sorry guys. I think you both would have liked was Cry Baby with Johnny Depp , set in the 50's or the movie Hairspray set in the 60's dancing music great stars like John Travolta, Christopher Walkin , Zac Effron, Michelle Phiffer, and Queen Latifa. about segregation dance music show like American Bandstand.. Two great musical movies.

Titanic is celebrating its 25th anniversary, maybe it’s time for Jordan to watch/react to it 😊. You’ve seen it right Amber?
