Yes that is Mathew Brodrick ( Farris Bueller) ,good war movie .It is Bruce Almighty Jay. 54th group is the African American men who fought in the civil war. It is a true story . Great part of history . Movies bring out the truth of how African men were treated . It was a fight for freedom . They were slaves then became important part of history.

One of my favorite movies and such an important story. I remember being disappointed it didn't get more Oscar nominations (5). It ended up winning 3. Denzel for a very well deserved best supporting actor (Morgan was also nominated for Glory), best Sound, and best Cinematography. This is one of those movies I return to at least once a year. The music score was by James Horner, arguably one of his best, and featured the Harlem Boys Choir throughout. That last shot at the credits is The Robert Gould Shaw and the Massechuesettes 54th Regiment memorial in Boston.

Also, the guy who said "Give em hell" is the screenwriter of the film, and the guy next to him who says "there are men dyin' up that road" is Hector Salamanca from Breaking Bad (for those that didn't know).

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. Being a Civil War history buff, it's high on my list. Glad you appreciated it. All props to Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, two of Hollywood's finest that you rightly called out. But I also dearly love the portrayal of Thomas by Andre Braugher, who's done a lot of fine work over the years. Also, as a big fan of the real life Frederick Douglas, I was pleased that what little time he spent on the screen here was finely portrayed by Raymond St. Jacques. The older folks in my family liked Rawhide, and Raymond helped blaze a trail on that show by being the first black regular cast member of a big prime time western in the 60's. This is also among the catalog of films I classify as "Mathew Broderick Monolog Heavy." Really, he seemed to get his share of those as a young actor. In this one, it's mostly voice-over narration. But in Ferris Bueller's Day off and Ladyhawk, he did a lot of speaking directly to the audience or having one-sided conversations with God. I eventually found out he had a lot of experience in Shakespearian theater when he was young, and have often thought it was probably good training for those roles. I'm not sure so many actors could sell those schticks so naturally as he did. Director Edward Zwick has a respectable filmography, but the real standout that tends to get lots of love is The Last Samurai. It'd probably be a good one for the channel someday.

This is such a great movie. You can’t go wrong with anything Denzel Washington is in. Never seen him do a bad movie.

Oh nice I haven't seen this since middle school (I'm big on black stories during but I don't spend alot of time on war time/era things), so it'll be me rewatching with yall!

Oh what a nice surprise, great movie! It’ll be nice for you to see Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) in more dramatic roles. I’d recommend “Crimson Tide” for a future watch, it’s one of my favorite Denzel Washington movies. And for a Denzel/Tom Hanks combo check out “Philadelphia”. You’re both right on the Bruce/Evan Almighty lol. Bruce is the Jim Carrey one and Evan is the sequel with Steve Carell. Both these actors are known for their comedic chops but they have some serious drama in them too (IMO). Check out “The Truman Show” and “Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind” for Jim Carrey, both are great movies. And for Steve Carell check out “Little Miss Sunshine” which has a great ensemble cast.

What a surprise! Let's go! I thought today was American Graffiti! I'm really glad you got to at least one of my Black History Month suggestions! I first saw this movie for school when I was in 8th grade. It was the first R rated movie I ever did see. Frankly, I'm surprised it was approved for public school use. This is one of my favorite true stories AND movies. This movie has a few familiar faces. Yes, Matthew Broderick IS Ferris Bueller, also the voice of Simba from the Lion King. Cary Elwes IS Dread Pirate Roberts/Westley from Princess Bride. The role for Washington put him on the map because he won the first of his two Oscars. The movie that had Morgan Freeman with Jim Carrey was BRUCE Almighty. Evan Almighty was with Steve Carell. The guy who was around Colonel Montgomery is the man who played that jackass warden from Shawshank Redemption. The battle at the beginning, Antietam Creek, it was the bloodiest battle in the Civil War. I know that watching Trip getting flogged was harder than hell. However, I am glad you got to see him cry that tear. You know why? Because that tear arguably won him that Oscar I mentioned above. Winning that award meant Washington got creative enough to show everyone that what was happening to him was dead wrong on so many levels. Shaw knew full well that what he was looking at was wrong too. Being the son of Boston abolitionists, it made him absolutely uncomfortable to see a Black human being getting flogged... in public, especially. He was just trying to live up to the colonelship he bore and the uniform he was wearing. At this moment, he now realized that those two characteristics (son of abolitionist and colonel) won't mix well any longer. I've been through Darien, Georgia, the "burn down the town" area, a couple of times at least. Whenever I pass through there, I have a sour taste in my mouth and a hot feeling in the pit of my stomach. Knowing what happened in Darien, being born and raised in Georgia, it makes me angry that even a member of the Union would commit atrocities like that. The guy who said "Give em hell 54th" is the same guy who was antagonizing them in the woods when the regiment was doing "manual labor". Again, so glad you watched this and that you feel pride in what Shaw and his regiment did for this country. Love you both very much!

Thanks guys for viewing this!
