EARLY ACCESS YT EDIT APOLLO 13 (1995) | FIRST TIME WATCHING | MOVIE REACTION

Comments

HIdden Figures is a great movie =)

Gretta S.

Y’all should do hidden figures. True story about nasa, it is great !

jami hicks

I watched it at home and I think all of us who was alive that day can remember it . It was horrible It as like no way that just happened . Type feeling of like you said just silence. So much shock. Very sad.

For my Senior High School trip, we visited the Kenedy Space Center in Florida. Me being such a little space nerd actually enjoyed it more than Disney at the time. It's a great little family trip if you are able to take the kids. I know several folks will now recommend "The Right Stuff" and it's a good movie as well. But my next favorite NASA movie is "The Hidden Figures". But that's pretty recent and maybe you've already seen it. If not, you HAVE to put it on the list.

yep. My school was watching too. During my crafts class. There was such excitement and then just silence.

Never seen a launch, but watched the coverage of many from the moon landing on, including Apollo 13. The whole country was tuned in. Space is beautiful but terrifying when so much can go wrong. Props to all the brave men and women of our space programs. Thanx so much, a;ways shoot for the stars, Peace

I am a bonafide space nerd. Most guys who play music have a guitar case covered with band and instrument maker stickers. Mine has stickers for NASA and various space mission patches all over it. If you like space, history, or better yet, space history, The Right Stuff is likely to hit your sweet spot. It also has Ed Harris, only this time, playing astronaut and future senator John Glenn. Some measures to be faithful to the book ended up diluting the film narrative a bit, IMHO, but since I'm a space nerd who liked the book, was pretty forgiving of that. Still a good solid flick worth watching. This film was a doozy to shoot with many of the weightless space scenes. They actually shot on the same kind of plane NASA uses to create weightlessness for training. You get about 23 seconds of weightlessness per the maneuver to create the free fall effect. Filming is already a tedious stop-and-start affair, and I can only imagine resetting a plane for the required shot and timing it all just made it even more so. But I think it paid off. It makes it all the more real looking compared to other films like Gravity or Interstellar. Both great films, but not as convincing as the real thing in-camera like Ron Howard did here. And points for making an engaging movie for space nerds like me who knew their history and how it all ended. Also, my congrats on the move, but dang, that is one of my least favorite chores. I feel for you.

Good movie. There is an older movie similar to this you both would enjoy called “The Right Stuff” (1983). I’m a space nerd so I love movies like this. 😊

Jeff Mills

Gary Senise (spelling ?) aka Lt. Dan, is in a few movies with Tom Hanks (Forrest Gino, The Green Mile, this one and maybe others). I have just noticed this while watching your reactions. Oh there he is again. I’m glad you’re reacting to this movie. It’s a really good one, and it is a true story. Have a wonderful weekend!

Hey Amber and Jay. Quick question about shout-out criteria. Maybe it's something you're only doing for top tier patrons, and I don't have to worry. Maybe you're getting specific consent beforehand to read names on the air, or by request per Karl. Or you're taking any Patreon membership as implied consent to get a shout-out on the air. If that last one is the case, I'd kindly like my name to be the first on a Do Not Shout-Out List. Nothing personal, but I am using my real name here on Patreon. No, I'm not hiding from a psycho ex who doesn't give a damn about that restraining order, or avoiding that Colombian cartel who's still sore about the speedboat full of coke that went “missing”. No, it's worse than that. 😆 I work for a major Hollywood movie studio, and may work for others in the future. As a result, I tend to be real sensitive about how I might be associated with movies and the business of making them while online. Here on Patreon behind a paywall, on private forums, on social media platforms where I can choose who sees my posts, or places where I might be using an alias, I'm all sorts of chill. But a YouTube video is significantly more public in availability, and I'm the subject of background checks from time to time where my public internet presence is fair game. I highly doubt it would ever matter to anyone, and if you did give me a shout out anyway, the chances it would have any negative consequences are laughably tiny. So maybe I'm being a little stupid and paranoid. If it were your music channel, it probably wouldn't even occur to me to be a potential problem. But then, I just play music for beer money. Movies pay my mortgage, and I have seen people have difficulties because of something they did, said, or were associated with online. So as a result, I tend to err heavily on the side of caution. I was just going to send the above as a private message, but it occurred to me there may be others curious about the shout-outs. Either how to get one, or like in my case, avoid one due to privacy concerns of their own. Anyway, gonna finish watching the rest of the reaction later and probably post something relevant to the actual movie afterwards. I do like this one. Just wanted to put that bit of business up first and on it's own.

It has nothing to do with space travel, but after watching this for some reason I thought 2 you need to watch are (1) Unforgiven, a fantastic western, and (2) The Last of the Mohicans

Brad West

I watched that in homeroom at school. We were all so excited, and then....it all went badly wrong. It was a very sad time. I think almost all schools were watching that lift-off because they had a school teacher on board.

Another great movie about the race to the moon is the film First Man. It is about the missions that lead up to the Apollo 11 moon landing. Fantastic film! Also, the Astronaut Corp currently has 41 total astronauts. I don't know the percentage of how many are men and women, but I do remember reading an article last year that was about the astronaut corp at NASA. Very interesting article.

Troy

This movie is true and they say your a rocket scientist has to be the smartest of all men. The Challenger in 1986 exploded shortly after take off and was televised . Killing all 7 of it's crew. Very sad very dangerous . Tom Hanks Movies - Money Pit, The Burbs, or That Thing You Do would be a few Hanks movies you wouldn't have heard of but so funny. Please have a safe move. I hope you enjoy your new home.

Lisa Rhodes

Another good actor you got introduced to here is Ed Harris (Gene Kranz) he has been in some great movies (National Treasure 2, Radio, the Truman Show, A Beautiful Mind and the Abyss) he was nominated for an Oscar for this role, since he never gave up on the crew's survival chances

Karl Kraus

Yes, also The Abyss.

Patty Estrada

Apollo 13 is just the tops when it comes to movie making, from writing, directing, music, acting, everything. Thank you for watching this. Another movie that is worth considering regarding America's Space Program is The Right Stuff, which is about the first 7 astronauts to fly into space in the 50s (I think I got that right). And of course, I can't help but plug a sci-fiction movie that takes humans all the way to Mars in the future (as realistically as possible), The Martian. Starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott. Excellent movie. You won't be disappointed.

Kristin D

Good reaction and solid film. And it's always nice to see Hanks and Sinise together. If you guys wanna mix it up with something that's mostly feel-good and involves Tom Hanks, I know you'll really enjoy "That You Thing You Do" written, directed and co-starring Tom Hanks. "Big" and "A League of Their Own" are also great.

Jimmie V

Ron Howard was in American Graffiti, in case you don't remember he played Steve, the kid with commitment problems he also had some of his family in the movie his mother, Jean, played Jim Lovell's on-screen mother his kid brother, Clint, was one of the Mission Control engineers he was the man who recommended the mission to the moon be aborted because of the blown oxygen cells AND his father, Rance, was a priest that was in the living room with the rest of the neighborhood and the Lovell family watching the TV at the end Ron has made some great films along with this one his best movie, A Beautiful Mind has been suggested on here alot, so give that a look when you want to it's another true story, only it has plenty of dramatic alterations from the real stuff but the characters are the same as in real life Ron and Tom Hanks would reunite to make some movies based on bestselling novels from the 2000s they're called the Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons they're great thrillers and the books are even better so give them a look and read the movies would be great for October flicks the Da Vinci Code also has Ian McKellen (Gandalf from LOTR)

Karl Kraus

Excellent suggestions. Another Ed Harris movie that I'd love to see them watch is The Abyss. I freaking love Edge of Tomorrow.

Kristin D

Thanks for the birthday shoutout guys! Whenever I see the crew splashdown, I get chills and even the occasional tear in my eye it's such a happy moment, not only in movie history but history in general seeing everyone from the minor characters to the extras celebrating the safe return, it's a hard moment to beat in "the happiest moments" category I watched this twice in my time at public school, once in 8th grade for physical science and the other in Astronomy class my senior year of high school for THAT class, I had to complete a watch-along sheet that had science-related questions, one of the easiest and most fun assignments I ever had

Karl Kraus

So excited to watch this! In the meantime, some suggestions based on the cast. I love Ed Harris, who plays flight director Gene Kranz. For him I’d suggest “The Truman Show” (which also stars Jim Carrey in a great dramatic roll), “The Rock” (action-thriller), “A Beautiful Mind” (also directed by Ron Howard, who directed Apollo 13), “A History Of Violence” (which stars Viggo Mortensen who plays Aragorn in LOTR), “Glengarry Glen Ross” (great ensemble cast), and “Stepmom” (if you like Steel Magnolias you’ll like this one). Tom Hanks suggestions are endless but one or my favorites is “Catch Me If You Can” (directed by Spielberg and based on a true story). There’s also “Cast Away” “Bridge Of Spies” “Philadelphia”, etc. For Bill Paxton who plays Fred Haise, “Titanic” (just watch it already Jordan lol), “Aliens” “Edge of Tomorrow “ (one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies) and “Nightcrawler”. Edit: THANKS FOR THE SHOUT OUT ❤️

Patty Estrada

Lt Cdr Fred Haise was played by Bill Paxton who was in Twister. Fred Haise's wife was played by Tracy Reiner. Tracy played the baseball player in 'A League of Their Own' whose husband died in the war. I believe her character's name was 'Betty Spaghetti'. The priest at the end of the movie is Ron Howard's father in real life. Jim Lovell's mother is played by Ron Howard's mother in real life. Kathleen Quinlan played Jim Lovell's wife and received an Academy Award nomination for her performance. The theme song is sung by Annie Lennox.

Adam Wyler

This was directed by Ron Howard from American Graffiti and Happy Days his brother Clint played Sy Liebergot one of the control guys and mom Jean played Blanche Lowell
