And as music fans! It's history told in rap and hip-hop and r&b and some Beatles vibes, which sounds like it wouldn't work, but it so does. It's just genius.

Maya Bairey «SupermodelSquad»

As teachers, I would really love to see their reaction to Hamilton!

precious926

Gregory Peck is 100% my old timey actor crush. Super swoon worthy. ☺️

Stephanie Wahl

You listed so many great ones! I’m hoping for To Kill A Mockingbird!

Janell

Great suggestions! I haven’t seen Remember the Night or Palm Beach Story; I’m going to check them out.

Janell

Great old movies to check out: Sunset Boulevard, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, To Kill A Mockingbird, Rebecca, Gone With the Wind, Roman Holliday, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, Some Like It Hot, Wait Until Dark, To Catch a Thief

Stephanie Wahl

If you're looking at movies you think might not be your style but will surprise you: Hamilton! It is soooo good. SOOOO good.

Back in 2017 I set a goal to watch all of the movies on AFI’s Top 100 list. I watched most of them, but one of the first ones I saw was “Casablanca”. A classic indeed. Amber and Jay, now that you’ve seen this I recommend checking out the song “Key Largo” by Bertie Higgins. 👍👍

1). I would throw in ,,Hatari" from 1962 with the great John Wayne, one of my favorite movies. It has adventure and love, so something that you both like i hope. 2). My favorite of all time ,,Ivanhoe" from 1952 with Robert Taylor and Elizabeth(Liz) Taylor. It's a great movie about the time of Richard Lionheard and the Knights and Maidens. 3). Two Questions: When do we get the finale of Star Wars with episode IX? And do you consider watching movies through the timelines like Rogue One and Solo?

LarsGrimm

You should read the book, “All About All About Eve.” It’s written by the writer director. It’s fantastic!

David Croft-Ogawa

I think that was Robert De Niro's first movie. Great movie?

Karen Silvera

Betty Davis is excellent in that movie!

Karen Silvera

I had to go back and look at B&W movies I've seen. I'm still a novice, but the ones I enjoyed that I think J&A will enjoy are: • My Girl Friday • Harvey (comedy, based on an old Celtic Legend of a Giant Rabbit) • Remember the Night (both will like it, Amber will love this one) • Palm Beach Story (rom-com) • Strangers on a Train (more Hitchcock, bit of a psychological thriller) To throw in a Science Fiction movie: • The Day the Earth Stood Still And since Halloween is coming up: • Frakenstein (watch this first) • Young Frankenstein (Mel Brooks spoof, one of his best movies). There are plenty of others that are in the early days of color film too that they will enjoy.

Yes on The Birds!!!! Such a great movie. I know I’ve seen it mentioned on here and on previous reactions, but To Kill A Mockingbird is a great classic black and white movie. My mom made me watch it as a kid and I’ve had my kids watch it, we all love it.

Jennifer Sanchez

That's a very interesting movie!

Kristin D

You gotta watch “All About Eve!!!”

David Croft-Ogawa

Harvey is an excellent suggestion. It's quirky and fun, right up their alley.

Kristin D

Great suggestions!

Janell

What a great movie! Loved watching it with you guys. Another great black and white film that you should watch is Harvey. It’s a bit different because it’s a comedy rather than a drama. It stars Jimmy Stewart, who is an incredible actor. This was a different role for him, because he usually was a leading man who kinda always got the girl. In Harvey he plays the town drunk and does so very well. The movie is funny but also has a lot of heart. It always makes me happy to watch.

Janell

You got my vote on that poll suggestion. But perhaps pick by decades. Though they've picked through most of my favorites Best Picture Oscars from the 90's. Come 80's night, I'd probably end up crushed that Rain Man beat Amadeus. But Rain Man is awesome, so, I'd get over it.

Robert Greffey

Well, this was a pleasant surprise, and another I've been eager for you guys to see. The word you're looking for to describe someone who loves the art and history of film would probably be “cinephile”. And if you're becoming one, welcome to the club. We'll have you watching Citizen Kane in no time.🎦🤓 Which, BTW, is probably one of my favorites for its usage of black & white photography (by Gregg Toland paired with the editing genius of Robert Wise. *chef's kiss*) In addition to this, Humphrey Bogart (Rick) is also fondly remembered as detective Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, a fine example of 40's film noir. But for my money, I love him best with Katharine Hepburn in The African Queen. You should stick that somewhere on your long list. Amber is 100% right about a love triangle being more dramatically interesting when you actually like all three people involved in it. So often one point of that triangle is so obviously Mr/Ms Wrong that it can start to feel like cheap and manipulative screenwriting. And now, time for O.G. Special Effect School. Amber called out a “green screen” shot, however, green screen (or more typically when shooting on film, blue screen) is a trick that you cannot do when shooting in black and white. What they did instead is what you're seeing here: rear projection. They literally put a movie screen behind the actors, and projected a movie behind them. It's a technique that survived a surprisingly long time after color film and blue screens changed special effects as a more budget friendly option. Anymore it's used more to to look purposefully retro, like in Pulp Fiction or the Austin Powers films.

Robert Greffey

We've been requesting this since the beginning because it is such a classic , artistic , memorable movie. Must watch.

Lisa Rhodes

Classic, glad you liked it. So many old films to explore. Gone with the wind is a classic….very long movie. Suspense? Rear Window. 12 Angry Men, To kill a Mockingbird, musicals? Weast Side Story and Singing in the Rain. So many that have already been mentioned in the comments. This movie in particular has so many quotable lines: here’s looking at you kid, this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, of all the gin joints in all the world you have to walk into mine, play it again, Sam, so, Manny. I’m so happy you’re starting to head back in time. Some of these movies are classics and I’m glad you like this one!

Mary Alice

Yes. Like when TCM does their 31 days of Oscar’s. But that’s too much for a reaction channel, I think lol. So a good Oscar’s poll would do.

Patty Estrada

I just watched double inventory and Laura because they were suggested here. Mildred Pierce is a fabulous movie too. I'll have to add that one.

Karen Silvera

Ok. So how many family members go watch the movies everyone recommends. ✋I do! Now I have to watch best years, 12 angry men, notorious, Maltese Falcon, and wizard of oz! You know what could be cool is watching every best picture Oscar award winner. Though it would probably be best to skip the silent movies.

Karen Silvera

OMG! Great choice and the theme is fantastic.

Karen Silvera

This film was shot before Pearl Harbor so it was very political for it's day. Here's another great suggestion for you... Notorious. It's directed by Hitchcock but a very different genre than Psycho. This one is suspenseful. It stars Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant. Another excellent cast and hugely popular. It was shot during WWII as well.

Karen Silvera

And the best years of our lives actually had WWII veterans in it! Fabulous movie.

Karen Silvera

And there are SO many lines from this movie that made it into the vernacular. What a great movie and Humphrey Bogart is such an incredible actor. J&A - he was bigger and more well known than anyone today. Ingrid's performance is stellar.

Karen Silvera

Just to expand your new appreciation for great black and white films, I'll suggest a couple of my favorites. The post-war film "The Best Years of Our Lives" is my favorite film... Rich beyond belief. And the one that every film student adores, "Citizen Kane."

Cliff Adams

I know about Baby (Lauren Bacall ) and Bogey(Humphrey Bogart) but the actress in Casablanca was Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman. So I was right

Elizabeth Franco

Actually after doing some searching it looks like Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were in several films: The Big Sleep, 1946; Dark Passage, 1947 and Key Largo, 1948. I've not seen the first two but I did enjoy Key Largo as well.

G Faith Owens EA

I love that you enjoyed this! It's the original romance story with suspense. If you are in the mood for another black and white classic you could try 1957's 12 Angry Men. It's another story that hooks you in and you can't stop watching.

G Faith Owens EA

Hi RS, when can we expect the full length reaction?

Patty Estrada

I hope you get to The Wizard of Oz 1939

Elizabeth Franco

I will be honest I never watched the whole thing .We all heard "here's looking at you kid " of all the gin joints you had to walk into mine," so many great one liners from Humphrey Bogart. His other big movie is Maltese Falcon.(1941).This one was made in 1942 Casablanca. To Kill a Mocking Bird for sure.( Next Black and White. ) NEVER ENDING STORY (Turned 39 today ) A MUST SEE WITH THE GIRLS YOU HAVE TO TEACH THEM Imagination and dreams are important. Bite the bullet Jordan and do THE BIRDS.The Wizard of Oz needs to do please. Been asking since the beginning . Everyone in the world knows of this story . You have to too.

Lisa Rhodes

Perfect! I worked from home today so I can watch it right now 😊.I love Hollywood’s Golden Age…here are some other suggestions you might like. “Double Indemnity” “Laura” and “Mildred Pierce” which are all murder film noirs. Now that you’ve seen and made it through “Pulp Fiction”, you can react to a gangster crime movie, one of my favorite genres. My top pick is “Goodfellas”, it’s a top three movie over all for me. It’ll introduce you to another of the great directors, Martin Scorsese.

Patty Estrada

This would be the only film Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman would ever star in.Both had successful careers and were stellar actors!

Elizabeth Franco

Welcome to an era and time when movies not only had one or two stars but a galaxy! Best picture winner (Oscar) one of the greatest films ever!

Elizabeth Franco

Wow … this is unexpected! I can’t wait to get home from work to watch one of the ALL TIME CLASSICS “along” with you. Good on ya, fam … good on ya.
