Monster Mailbag

Hi folks,

Wishing you the very best for the coming week from everyone at Rusty Towers!

Firstly, a quick heads up, some of you may notice an update to the Rusty Quill Patreon page this week. Patreon have kindly invited us to participate in another early access feature to improve your experience here on the platform. If you use the Patreon on desktop computer, you may notice a change to our main homepage in the coming days, which will begin to highlight a mixture of our collections, podcasts and newest posts, making it easier to navigate to some of our older content. As this is in early access, not everyone will see this change to begin with. If you use the Patreon app on a phone or tablet, nothing will change. As always, if you have any questions or feedback, you can send us a DM or email us at mail@rustyquill.com .

Next up, a huge thank you to everyone who’s been listening to Broken Hearted Monsters, our big-hearted, bittersweet roadtrip series on Neon Inkwell. We’re just over halfway through this lovely series and the mailbag is now open for your questions about the show! If you have any questions for writers, SC Ormond and Morgan Ormond, director Amani Zardoe or composer, Nico Vettese, just head to the Broken Hearted Monsters mailbag form to send us your questions. The form closes on 21st April.

This week, in Broken Hearted Monsters, Frank and Dracula continue to navigate the tricky social politics of Frank’s family reunion. As Dracula meets Frank’s brother – The Perfect Man – he’s not quite what he expected…

Meanwhile, in The Magnus Protocol, there’s a place to stay and a familiar face.

Finally, in news from the RQ Network, nominations for the CRIT Awards are now open. Soul Operator, an actual play that blends TTRPGs with narrative storytelling, is looking for nominations in a number of categories. We spoke to the creator of the show, Tatiana Gefter, to find out a bit more about the show.

Soul Operator is the perfect show for fans of liminal horror featuring themes of found family and asks the question "are you your memories?"

I am the writer, producer, and lead actress in the show. I was originally drawn to podcasting because of how well it handles horror as a medium. That and it is incredible accessible for those who want to dip their toes into the space, if they are willing to put in the time and effort.

Soul Operator was created with the intention of highlighting the genre of Solo TTRPGs, and does so via a narrative adaptation of actual gameplay. This melding of actual play and audio drama lends itself well to both communities, hopefully bridging a gap between audiences which I believe should overlap more!”

If you’re a fan of Soul Operator, please consider nominating the show for the CRIT Awards 2025 at https://www.critawards.org/ . If you haven’t yet checked the show out, now is the perfect time to! You can listen wherever you find podcasts, or on the Rusty Quill website.

Magnus Archives sti queues up for me out of order on Spotify. I've been troubleshooting but have had no luck, so I thought I'd comment and see if anyone else has had the issue and fixed it somehow, or if it a Spotify issue!

Just wanted to say Broken Hearted Monsters has been a comfort and a joy during a Rather Stressful period in the US lately. Thank you everyone who has been working on this - this is vital sustenance.
