My entire home is in boxes at the moment. I'm moving this upcoming weekend. So I'm revisiting some older sketches with more context now that the comic is 30+ pages in.
These were some sample sketches I did as I tried to fill out the world around Ken/Gwen.
Friend 1 was supposed to be antagonist or annoyance Print Wall Steve. As I was developing the story more and more, I ended up swapping some of his look with an early look for Ken.
Part of the reason is that I was getting more of an idea of who Steve was and this friendly bald fella was more inline who with I had in mind for Ken, and Steve was getting more slimy and 'professional'. So it made sense to put Ken in a t-shirt and Steve in a dress shirt or a polo.
Also as for Ken's transition, I could see Ken feeling self conscious on their lack of hair keeping them being taken seriously as a woman. Feeding their anxiety and wanting Kalya to cast her spell.
Friend #3 was an early design for Kayla. I like a nice undercut. Feels so good. But I think as it became soooooo common for any kinda edgy girl to have an undercut, I opted for the pompadour. A look that I'm also quite fond of, as I lean into my rockabetty preferences.
Some of Friend #2 also went into Steve with the nose and chin shirt. Friend #4 really didn't go anywhere.
At this point in development, Tiffany wasn't really a character .
