Hello all! Here's the big update, as promised.

For many months now, I’ve noticed some stagnation with my YouTube channel. I’ve recognised as well that it’s my own doing. I went from uploading multiple times a week for years to embarking on the video essay route, where I thought I’d be able to upload fortnightly but this proved more and more difficult the more I did it. This left gaping holes of time where nothing would be published - the worst thing one can do with their channel - and so growth has just plateaued.

With this being said, I think my best course of action from now is to start putting the kinds of video I’ve been uploading to Patreon back onto YouTube. Regular reviews and first listens especially, which were the kinds of video that built the channel and community in the first place. Just to be clear, I only mean new videos I’ll be creating from now, not ones I’ve made already. I need to start getting the channel back to a healthy place, and it begins with that important step.

In doing that, however, my aim is to make the Patreon even better - this is your opportunity to let me know what kinds of thing you’d wanna see on here going forward. I already have some ideas like:

- Quick feedback on your music whenever (for producers)

- regular Reviewing Subscribers’ (your) Music

- Extended Tracks of the Week / Best of Bass with ‘Decent’ (good but not great) and ‘Deary Me’ (bad) categories

- Track of the day (celebrating old classics)

- Behind the scenes stuff

- Monthly bloopers videos

- Classic album / EP / compilation streaming parties (done properly this time!)

- Extra editions of things I’d usually do on the channel but chosen by you (Interview segments, Tier Lists, Opinion Pieces, EDM Meme vids etc.)

- Exclusive clips before going up on channel

Is there anything else you’d really wanna see that wouldn’t be available on the YouTube channel?

A little FYI - I’m very much gonna be starting afresh with this Patreon, which means I’ll be removing virtually everything I’ve uploaded here so far. I’ll be posting about this again to remind you all, but if there are videos on here you wanna watch again before they’re taken down, this is your first warning! You won’t need to pledge again in the midst of these changes.

I also wanna take this opportunity to thank you all so much for your contributions and pledges up to this point. Nawtystep simply would not still be here without all of you. You’ve helped enable the presence of criticism - and deep musical appreciation - in the Bass scene, which is no small thing - a very important thing, in fact. On top of that, you’ve allowed me to keep doing what I’m most passionate about, and for that I am very grateful.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to read this, and I hope it all makes sense. Any questions please don’t hesitate to drop them in the comments!

Don't worry, plan was always to have them up somewhere else which is exactly what I'm doing :) backed up with new post dropping now

That's what I've been doing for a year though no? The First Listens on here are all full streams, with the uncut stuff going on YT. Correct me if that's not actually what you guys are talking about

I really honestly hate that you are taking down a lot of the videos on patreon. Feels a bit shitty, just leave them in like a playlist or something? I support all these other changes, but cmon man, that’s the content I paid for.

AustralianAlex

Yes electronic non-bass music like what you did with the Kx5 and the Calvin Harris album. That’s really exciting to hear you’re reviewing the new Illenium album since he’s very clearly one of the most popular acts in bass music at the moment. I do love the roasting your top vids though since it is interactive too, so I hope you’re able to do those as well when/if time permits

Hadn’t thought of that, a good idea!

I think plan will be to put them into an unlisted YT playlist you guys can view whenever you want :)

Do you mean electronic non-Bass albums? Coz broadening out to anything wouldn’t quite work for the channel if that’s what you mean. I’m hoping to review the new Illenium album for example. I could do a vid on my non-favourites list I do end of every year for sure

Fear not! This doesn’t mean the video essays are discontinuing. Will be made clear very soon with another new post, but I just wanted to make clear here that I’m integrating reviews and first listens back into the channel. I’m going full pelt with everything but again, all will be made clear with next post

I think still reviewing albums that you may not consider “bass albums” would be nice to still see and perhaps you can do an end of the year video about non bass songs that make your list. Other than that, I am also advocating for more Patreon polls and videos specific for us like more “roasting your top _____” which could be our own tracks of the month or albums/EPs of the month, reviewing live events or live sets, and some more AMAs. I love what you do man!

A bit sad, that it seems like you will not continue making video essays. They were so good. I can only agree with 'please don't delete your videos you did for us Patreons'. I would love to see you diving into music from underground communities like the 'Temination' e.g. Blujam with his new pirate themed album. I think this would give them a chance to broaden their fanbase.

would love a review on a song I’ve been working on!

I respect whatever direction you decide to take for the sustainability of your channel and I really like the ideas here, especially the Extended TOTW and the Track of the Day. Personally I've been wanting to see a "Best Reactions" compilation from the first listens for a while, like when the tune is so good that you pause it and get off your chair for instance 😂. I wouldn't know if you or any editors would shift through all them videos/vods to find the best clips, but it could be a fun one-off idea for the Patreon and a potential form of archiving some memorable moments if you can't unlist the videos for some reason. With that being said, I want to say that I still love your quality content, the generous benefits for those who pledge and what you represent in this scene. Best of luck with these new changes. :)

Thank god you are doing this!!!!! This is what ive been saying! Dont take away the videos though!

jack

I agree with the change in direction, however I would much prefer if instead of removing all the old patreon content if you archived it in some regard. I think the best way would be to leave it all up as an unlisted YouTube playlist that we can access from a patreon post

Hey! Good to see that you still care about your main channel and I am glad that you want to come back to the roots! Im sure this will make your growth come back! Personally, I loved it when you reviewed subscriber‘s (and my own ;)) music. So id really welcome it if you started doing that again. Also for me, I never really have the time to catch you live on twitch. So a monthly best of, of funny or important moments sounds like something I’d be looking forward as a subscriber to your patreon Take care man!

Like the idea of uploding edited first listen material to youtube and uncut to patreon. This way the range of the channel would be increased while the patreons still got the material they came for.

Agree with everything you wrote. Youtube is where it's at in terms of fostering a community + getting exposure. Youtube and Patreon ideas: -I really really loved your interview with TimbahOnToast. And I thougt you work really good as an interviewer. To me it seems an obvious opportunity for you to do detailed interviews with producers (dicord call would do), since you already have connections with producers. I remember when you livestreamed the teminite album, he was in chat and you asked him some questions and he said stuff like family members did some vocals. Would have absolutly loved a 1-2 hours extended interview in light of "Raise The Black Flag" release. Nitepunk did just that for “HUMAN” release, there are two interviews with him up on youtube. Tengraph interview was also interesting and insightful, but a bit hard to get into since I didn’t know him and can’t really connect to his music. But I loved his story and perspective. For reference there is a youtuber (“Back to Back with Willy Joy”) who does interviews with edm/dubstep producers, he just did a nitepunk interview. Maybe he already fills the niche I described already. Would have also love a dyatic interview since he already is in chat sometimes. Intreviews don’t have to be a super high production effort, it can just be a recorded discord call. They also don’t have to be the bulk of your channel, just sprinkled in every now and then would be enough. -What a lot of "movie reaction" youtubers do is they cut short versions for youtube (30min) and upload the unedited, complete footage (~2h) to patreon. Maybe you could apply the same principle. And upload unedited streams to patreon. -Since you are sort of a "dubstep historian" who knows a lot of tracks, it would be fun if patreons could send you underground/old dubstep songs (e.g. a 2016 soundcloud track with 10k views) as IDs and if it's unfamiliar to you, you guess the era/artist and give your thougts to it. Althougt I don't know how the logistics would work with sending them as IDs, this is just a brainstorming idea. -A general thougt about your style: You never really go into technical detail. You rate production, you comment on snares, but you don’t go indepth about reverb use or mixing, you never speculate which instrument or effect is used to create a sound. You comment about the output that you are hearing and don’t worry about the input. You treat dubstep as an artform, you listen to a whole track at once without pause. And that’s what makes your style so unique. You are an actual music critic, not another producer bro who rambles about technical details that he himself couldn’t replicate. The fact that you are not producing, but focus your whole process on examining and enjoying artistic output, creates a healthy distance that is necessary to properly review on a big scale. I love your content. Never change!

Reviewing subscriber’s music would be super duper

Reviewing subscribers music would be really neat

100% this. If u left a post for us to state 1 recommendation each to u and have u react!!!!!!!!!

AXIDNT

What will you do with all those old reaction videos then? Relisting them or will they just be gone forever?

Instes

Love the plans for the Patreon! Love some more opinion pieces and classic reviews. Also some things outside of the bass music scene would be fun. Appreciate all the work you've put in the Patreon and youtube channel!

Feedbacks for producers/reviewing subscribers’ music is awesome, and given that I’ve an album in the works, I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it. ☺️

I appreciate that you always try to bring the Nawtystep project in the best direction, and you do not hesitate taking risks for that. I will support you and the channel with every step it takes. Thank you for igniting my personal love for electronic music, and the even more difficult aspect: Keep it burning. Your video uploads and the release of a new best of bass playlist is always something I am looking forward to. Keep this project evolving! My favourite ideas of your suggestion - Extended Tracks of the Week / Best of Bass with ‘Decent’ (good but not great) and ‘Deary Me’ (bad) categories - Track of the day (celebrating old classics) - Classic album / EP / compilation streaming parties (done properly this time!)

I've always particularly enjoyed the videos in which we have submitted things for you to give thoughts on, and there's quite a lot of potential with that format. I imagine it would also probably bring a lot of new subscribers. Would also really like to see the listening parties go ahead too! All of the ideas sound great. Sending you the best of luck with the new channel changes!

Good luck with these new changes :') I'm sure we'll keep enjoying your content as usual.

Also you should archive the old content so we can still watch it, I love going back to stuff like the Color Bass Vol 3 from time to time just to see how happy that comp made ya feel :)

No later than yesterday was I thinking it would be cool if you did reviews for subscriber's musics once in a while. I fully support those changes ! A bit sad your previous videos will disappear though

Seems like a wise move. As far as additional content on Patreon I'd be stoked if you'd post some first reactions to suggestions, get some more underground stuff repped
