New Map Men episode, 24 hours early!

Knock knock.

Who’s there?

A new epis.

A new epis who?

A new epis…whood of Map Men!

That was terrible.

I know. Sorry.

That’s not even how knock-knock jokes work. The “who” doesn’t form part of the punchline!

I’m sorry, I didn’t really think it through.

Go away.

Ok. Sorry for bothering you.

*LONG EXHALE* Sorry about that. He is right though. There *IS* a new episode of Map Men. And it’s available to watch here on Patreon right now. And because you are all so absolutely wonderful, you get to see the new episode and the accompanying knock-knock joke before anybody else!

Funny story, the topic covered in this episode was originally going to be just a brief side-note in the previous episode. But when we showed the script to my wife, she was all like “Why isn’t that brief side-note an episode in its own right?” So we (Mark) bought and read a book about it, and it turns out she was absolutely right, and there was a whole brilliant juicy tale to tell. So the brief side-note in episode 2 has spun off on its own, octupling in length and interestingness to become fully fledged episode 3. Hope you like it!

This episode, as usual, has an advert at the end, but unlike most of our ads, this one pays us according to how many people sign up. So we’re trying to get as many people as possible to click on the link. You guys are already being more than amazing enough by being Patreon members, but if you fancy helping us out a little extra, when you’ve got a spare 40ish seconds, please sign up to Skillshare’s free trial, because it literally gives us money. (Also, Skillshare is genuinely really good.) Thank you so so so much!

Right! 3 episodes down, 8 to go. Hope you’re enjoying this new regular upload schedule. It’s you guys who make it possible, and I really don’t thank you enough. You’re **ALL** amazing!!

Ooh, actually, one more thing! Can I ask, honestly, is the music too loud? I’ve just noticed (actually my wife’s just noticed) the music near the end might be mixed a bit too high. I *CAN* fix it and reupload, but only if it definitely need doing, cos it’ll take me a good 40 minutes. In fact, can you let me know if you spot any other easily fixable errors that it’s worth reuploading for? Thanks!

I’m back with a better joke! Say “knock knock.”

No. I told you, go away.

Please!! This one’s better than the last one, I promise. Say “knock knock”.

No.

Pleeeeease!?

Fine. Knock knock.

Map men, map men, map map map, men - that's a short intro song!

Honestly the sound is fine to me. And I'm so thankful Map Men is back.

Sounds seems fine to me! Loving the regular uploads. Sorry I can't sign up for skillshare again, already did the MapMen free trial a few months back. No idea how you keep coming up with different ways to advertise it!

The Queen made me laugh out loud, brilliant. :)

Thanks so much Martin! That will be changed too in the reuploaded version tomorrow. :D

Jay Foreman

Brilliant! Thanks so much. I'll change that too. Thank you!!!! :)

I liked the brief appearance of the spies from Chip's Challenge 👍

I correctly guessed Glasgow as one of the three maps I didn't know we were meant to guess, when I spotted the area I grew up in. Now I'm going to have to try to find a bigger version to see what its name is in Cyrillic. I can't answer your question about the music levels as I watched with the sound off, but did see a typo in the subtitles: 'elicit' should be 'illicit'. But fascinating stuff, I did not know about any of these maps.

Ok I’ve emailed you. Thanks.

Just watching through and seeing if I can spot any errors, really enjoying this topic so far btw. 1:22 Andropov's name is misspelt and says "Anropov". It's lucky I know who he is ;) I'll edit with anything else I notice. Edit: Didn't find any, nice work Jay.

Hi Matt! Thanks so much for pointing this out. Luckily, there's still 24 hours to go til the video's due to go fully public, so there's still time to fix this! To be absolutely sure we get it right, could you do me a massive favour and screenshot the correct building? I'm not sure which grey blob you mean. If you can't send images through here, can you send it to my email address? jayforemanmusic@gmail.com. Thanks!! :)

Jay Foreman

Hi! Cambridge local here. The ‘bunker’ you have pointed at 2:41 actually is ‘another boring bit of university building’. The Cass centre. You want the bigger grey blob to the right.

I mean brilliantly done, the fact that 90% of stuff from those times is still heavily classified makes us both sad and laugh out loud at how lost in time our politicians are

I have a reproduction of a 1973 1:25 000 Soviet map of my home town, Halifax, Nova Scotia. The house I grew up in is accurately located. It's pretty amazing.
