“I don’t understand Jimin hyung anymore. He’s a stranger to me now,” complains Jungkook. He kicks a pebble off their front porch, sucking on a popsicle. “It’s like his entire attention is on his phone these days.”

He doesn’t get it. It’s not fair. Is this what ‘growing up’ means? Because if Jimin is going to ignore Jungkook forever as part of being a grown-up, then Jungkook never EVER wants to grow up. No more birthdays for him, thank you very much.

Namjoon hums and closes the thriller novel he’s reading, then adjusts his glasses to look at Jungkook. “Maybe he has a crush.”

Jungkook makes a face and scoffs. “On his boy penpal?”

“It can happen,” Namjoon says. “If you’re G-word. Boys can like boys.”

Jungkook mulls this over. “How can you tell if you’re a G-word?”

“You just know.” Namjoon reaches over and pats the left side of Jungkook’s chest, which makes his heart flip. “Here. You can feel it.”

“That’s the only way? Can’t people take a test?” Jungkook suggests, thinking of how a lot of human conditions can be detected through medical testing.

“Being a G-word isn’t a condition,” Namjoon answers. “Nor a disease. It just is. You just are. Maybe your friend is one, but we’ll never know until he’s sure.”

Jungkook frowns, imagining his neighbor having a crush on a boy and wanting to spend time with a non-Jungkook friend. It’s excruciating. How’s he supposed to share his best friend? Who’s gonna hunt Pokemon stickers with Jungkook now?

“I’ll do it,” says Namjoon, and Jungkook gasps.

He didn’t think he said that out loud. Then again, Jungkook does tend to do many things before thinking. Actions first, consequences later.

Namjoon pulls out his cellphone and shows its backside to Jungkook. “I collect, too.”

“Wah. Is that a Mangnanyong sticker?!” Jungkook makes grabby hands, but Namjoon holds his phone out of reach.

“Mangnanyong’s not easy to find. Sorry bro, you gotta find your own.”

Jungkook grins. “Okay. Call. Let’s be Pokemon hunters.”

Namjoon nods and gives him a thumbs up.

ONE YEAR LATER

Jungkook sits in front of his computer and takes a deep breath as he types a new search term into the Naver engine.

“am i”

“am i g”

“am i g-word”

“am i gay quiz”

He clicks the first website that pops up, cracks his knuckles, and tackles the quiz like his report card depends on it.

(According to the test results explanation, his gay nickname is baby star candy.)
