Chapter 1
My name is Jimin Park, but I didn’t always go by that name. Before, I used to be called simpler things, since those were the simpler days. ‘Bestie’, ‘cutie’, and most fondly… Chim.
“Chim.” There’s a finger pressing against my cheek. I groan and lift my head, eyes bleary with sleep, and find my best friend Taehyung Kim’s glittering light brown orbs staring into me. He points at the shop window. “Wake up. Biker gang fight soon again, I think. You hear that?”
Vroom vroom. I hear it, alright. The unmistakable sound of engines revving, roaring down the street. Ugh! I hate it. It’s a telltale sign that the city’s notorious biker gang – the Blue Gamma Phi Nu – are terrorizing the neighborhood again. They like to smash shit for attention. This is what I hate about being situated in Seoul’s college neighborhoods. It’s always near Greek Row, which makes avoiding those stupid fraternities and sororities inevitable.
I sigh and push to my feet. “Let’s close up shop, then.” The tough part about manning a CD rental store is that once you hear the bikers zooming by, it’s closing time. The Blue’s rival gang – the Kappa Red Society – always seems to show up just in time for a fight. And they’re never just petty little squabbles, oh no. I’ve seen it happen on my first part-time shift here. A big fight broke out, and if the screaming and banging noises were anything to go by, I wouldn’t suppose it was a chill affair. Blood was (probably) involved. I was horrified, to say the least, but Taehyung took it all in stride. Perks of having worked here since high school (yeah, his uncle owns the store).
Anyway. So there we were, trying to close up shop, me pulling down the metal gate, when a flash of white light suddenly freaking blinds me! I stagger and rub my eyes, realizing too late that it’s someone’s headlights reflected against the store’s window. I turn around at the sound of tires revving and find myself looking at the silhouette of a male figure, just a stark shadow against his motorbike’s headlights.
“Jimin Park?” The silhouette speaks, and I almost pee my pants because holy hell, how does a biker member know my name?!
I stand frozen to the ground, mouth ajar. The biker scoots closer to the sidewalk and his face comes into the light, and I immediately recognize him: Jungkook Jeon, one of the bigger names in the Blue Gamma Phi Nu hierarchy. Second only to their little leader, whose name people fear even mentioning. The guy is only a freshman, but he has so many tattoos in his right arm that most people would think he’s a working adult or something, because tattoos are expensive.
I swallow, palms clammy. “Y-yes?” Shit, no. Wrong move! I shouldn’t have responded. I quickly backtrack. “I mean. Jimin Park who?”
Jungkook frowns, eyes flashing with disdain. He whips out a photograph from his leather vest and scrutinizes it. “Yeah, it’s you alright.”
“Th-there is no Jimin Park in this store!” Taehyung bursts in from behind the door, eyes wide with terror. “Only, uh. Chim.”
Jungkook eyes him with interest, before returning his steely gaze to me. “Come with me.”
“W-why?” I stuttered fearfully, clutching my chest.
“Leader-nim wants to see you.”
I scratch my head, growing confused. I haven’t done anything that would warrant the attention of any biker gang, what the hell. “Why?”
“Because.” Jungkook takes me by the arm and starts dragging me. I grunt and stumble.
“Hajima!” Taehyung exclaims, one hand extended towards me. “Chim, don’t go with them!”
“Taehuyng-ah!” I cry out. “I’ll be back!” I turn to Jungkook, who is still dragging me by the arm even though I’m already following him somewhat willingly. “Right? I’ll be able to return, right?” I hope I’m not in trouble. I still have an essay due tomorrow and I really can’t be bothered right now.
I don’t say any of that, though. With fear in my heart, I hop onto Jungkook’s motorbike and clutch the back of his leather vest. Whatever happens from now on, happens. It’s out of my control.
“Where are you taking me?” I ask over the noise of the air ripping through my ears as we start zipping down the lane.
Jungkook grunts. I pout.
Soon he parks in front of an abandoned warehouse and brings me inside. It’s a little spooky in the darkness but I’m thankful for some moonlight so I can avoid the puddles. I just got my new Chelsea boots so I can’t risk getting them muddied, after all.
There’s a small gathering of chairs in a circle right in the middle of the empty warehouse. Leaning against the backrest of one is a man I’ve only ever heard of, because although he’s a student at Seoul Uni, he’s never in any of his classes. Heaven knows how he stays enrolled.
I shiver, fearfully, as my footsteps near and I lay my eyes on the most frightening senior to have graced the campus grounds, a dangerous man in leather and layered chain necklaces. It glints in the moonlight.
“Jimin Park,” he drawls in a husky voice. I stifle a hiccup.
“I don’t respond to that,” I replied. “Everyone calls me Chim.”
There’s a scar that runs down the length of his right eye. It’s his trademark physical trait. Legend says that he got it after defending his biker gang’s base from another rival university’s clutches. There are a lot of legends around him, really – Yoongi Min, the leader of Blue Gamma Phi Nu.
