I've thickened the character perimeter lines back to their older width for more definition as well as toned back the saturation a smidge, although it is barely perceivable.

That might be the thing. Its very subtle. As long as all these 3 don't cost you anything (time/money), I think go with the one you like. If one is easier than the other, I'd go with that one. I'm starting to warm up to the saturation a bit... but I feel it lacks teh texture/crispyness of the old style
