Hello!

This is a solo over the song "The Hustle Is On" written by T-Bone Walker.

The solo that I'm playing, I've "borrowed" from Anson Funderburgh. He plays this solo in this video.

The solo is theoretically very simple. It's based on the pentatonic scale, blues scale, and the mixolydian scale. Even though it's "simple," it's a very tasteful solo that contains many interesting phrases.

In the sheet music/tabs, I've noted in some cases how I use my pick. Apart from that, it's a matter of personal preference how you want to play it. If you watch Anson Funderburgh when he plays this solo, he uses a lot of downstrokes. This can be challenging at this tempo, but I like the "sound" you get when you use a lot of downstrokes instead of playing down and up all the time. When you play downstrokes with the pick all the time, the swing/shuffle feeling isn't as pronounced, which is a good thing in my opinion. Of course, this is a matter of taste.

I hope you like the solo as much as I do. Below is an analysis of the solo (take 1) that is color-coded. The analysis can also be downloaded as a PDF file if you're a Patreon member.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

I'm happy to help.

Thanks! Yeah, I really agree. They are really great. Anson did a great job with these lines. The good stuff with these lines are that they also work on a 5 - 4 - 1 since they don't specifically outline the 2 5 1 progression

Great stuff Emanuel...some of the phrases in this piece are gems (especially the ii-V's on the turnarounds). Gotta steal some of these phrases and get 'em into my arsenal. Cheers!

Hi John and thank you for your support. I've got some more "slow" etudes and solos to share with you. You'll find a mix in there – some bluesy vibes, and others leaning a bit more into jazz territory. Hopefully, you'll dig something that catches your ear. If you need any help at all, feel free to give me a shout. I'm here to help, always. P.S. A useful tip is to approach the études/solos by selecting specific phrases and licks that pique your interest. Rather than feeling like you have to tackle entire solos or études from beginning to end, try picking out the phrases and licks that really speak to you. Grab the ones that match up with your skill level, and work on incorporating them into your own playing style. You can even dive into the theory behind them if you're up for it. But hey, there's absolutely nothing wrong with learning a full solo or étude from start to finish if you've got the time and itch to do so! https://www.patreon.com/posts/licks-for-blues-71302654 https://www.patreon.com/posts/slow-blues-in-b-31573199 https://www.patreon.com/posts/easy-slow-blues-25934573 https://www.patreon.com/posts/minor-blues-solo-82336683 https://www.patreon.com/posts/c-minor-jam-78673648 https://www.patreon.com/posts/e-minor-blues-47212630 https://www.patreon.com/posts/minor-blues-solo-33342222 https://www.patreon.com/posts/minor-vibrations-30772558 https://www.patreon.com/posts/bob-dylan-make-25062060 https://www.patreon.com/posts/my-sunshine-in-e-24817183 https://www.patreon.com/posts/slow-dancing-in-23058644 https://www.patreon.com/posts/flower-power-neo-29417313 https://www.patreon.com/posts/im-prince-neo-28257720 https://www.patreon.com/posts/68-jazz-soul-25538991 https://www.patreon.com/posts/donuts-neo-soul-22639279 https://www.patreon.com/posts/neo-soul-etude-22477873
