Making of Final Orginity v0.4.1 (II): Amy vs. Mort & Phil

How's everything going out there? Are you all ready for Christmas yet? We're not quite there yet. We're still pushing ahead with the game development. The next version is going to be packed with surprises, and it's definitely going to be a game-changer for the Final Orginity experience.

But today's post isn't about that. We still have a few more scenes from version 0.4.1 to go over. We've already taken a look at the shower scene, and now, folks, it's time to dive into the action scenes. That's right, today we're talking about the combat training scene.

Meet Mort & Phil

After 10 versions of Final Orginity, our protagonist Amy has already met quite a few male characters in the city. Up until now, most of them have been pretty... forward, and naturally, they've all had a thing for Amy. (I don't blame them!) But now, we wanted to introduce a couple of male characters with a slightly different vibe.

In version 0.4.1, Amy has the chance to join the city guard, or at least start as a trainee. During her training, she'll have to team up with her fellow rookie guards, and these two characters—Mort & Phil—are some of her new comrades.

Mort & Phil are a couple of goofy, bald-headed guys who came to the city with dreams of becoming real guards. Mort is the taller, more cheerful one, while his 'boss' Phil is the grumpier type, always complaining about how his luck is never as good as Mort’s.

You might not know this, but their design is actually inspired by Mortadelo and Filemón, two iconic characters from the famous Spanish comic strip by Francisco Ibañez—probably the most well-known comic in Spain. Including these characters in the story was definitely one of the best ideas SpaceSandwich has had. Of course, we didn't use the exact characters from the comic; they’ve been adapted to Final Orginity's style.

The Scene

The idea for this scene was that, on her first day of training, Amy would face off against both Mort and Phil at the same time... and, of course, end up kicking their butts! Here’s the final version of the scene, of which the base was made from scratch by SpaceSandwich.

At first, Amy faces off against Phil. Armed with a guard’s war hammer, she goes up against Phil, who’s wielding a simple (but surprisingly effective) rake. It’s effective because with one quick move, Phil manages to disarm Amy and leave her completely vulnerable, just as Mort lines up for a finishing blow. Here are the sketches showing how Phil cleverly disarms Amy with a wrist twist.

But Amy is no helpless damsel! She manages to dodge Mort's attack and even tricks the bald guy into accidentally smacking Phil in the ass. This leaves poor Phil knocked out of the fight. Both the concept and the final result for this part of the scene were done by SpaceSandwich, who really worked hard to stay true to the classic Mortadelo and Filemón comic style. Amy was pretty clever, huh? 

To wrap up this first fight, Amy gets her chance to finish off Mort. And for this part, we were lucky enough to have Atom step in and help out. In his spare time, he managed to draw a cool leg lock move, where Amy takes down Mort, leaving him on the brink of suffocating from her thick thighs. Poor Mort!

So, that’s the making of the fight between Phil, Mort, and Amy! There's still a second fight with Instructor Jak coming up, but that's another story. What’s important today is that we learned a lot: Phil and Mort are based on real characters, we’re still in touch with our beloved Atom (even though he can barely draw for us these days), and Amy... well, you might want to avoid messing with her because she definitely knows a thing or two about self-defense.
