Howdy, friends! Ever wonder why tuition keeps going up but college degrees become less and less valuable? Let's talk about the commodification of higher education and what that means for students and society as a whole. Hope you enjoy!

How American College Became a Scam

Looks like higher education in the U.S became a means to suffocate with anxiety millions of people. I experienced the anxiety of having a horrible student loan debt, thankfully I'm out of it but it is true that the purpose of education should be educate, create citizens with critical thought and change this corrupt world built in capitalism. I disagree with the fact that universities should become jobs training programs. Education should be a human right, not a means to extract profit from others who are struggling.

if there's one field to set up parallel structures outside the system, it would be education, imo. the paper you'll get inside this system will become worth less and less (in time it will only be a clubcard an a certificate of your knowledge of the axioms of the ruling class).

Take a look how the California State system works. All bonds. All debt. https://www.projectcensored.org/occupied-sonoma-state-university-no-billionaire-left-behind-and-the-sordid-tale-of-the-financialization-and-corporatization-of-one-california-state-university/

The worst thing about all of this is having a dream job that REQUIRES at least a Bachelor’s Degree. So even though I know all of this now, I still have to dive head first into it. ☹️😮‍💨 However, everyone needs to see this so that we can get together and figure out what comes next!

when you said that those education bonds (or whatever they were called) sound reasonable at a glance... my first reaction was: HOW?! like... a school is not a for profit institution... they have operating costs to cover... them having a "return on investment" means they suddenly have to be making a profit... and nothing about that sounds remotely reasonable thats like saying the military is making a profit... if they are then they are not a military - they are a mercenary company or when a government is running a profit... thats not a government, thats misappropriation of government funds

I lived through this. I did my grad school 2006-2008. My tuition basically doubled each semester for 2 years. So sad. I'm grateful for channels like this that can help educate freely. We really need to decide: are we a society or a business? I'm tired of pretending it's not the latter.

Even back in the 70s, in New York, when I went to college, I was lucky as I got a regent's scholarship to cover my tuition. For my friends who didn't get one, their best alternative was to go to a community college for 2 years and then cough up the bucks for a state school for their last 2 years to get a bachelors. At least, they could get through the first 2 years cheap.

very grateful I avoided the scammy part with FAFSA. getting my associates and bachelor's degrees for free and if I get a scholarship or two, I should be able to get my doctorate for free (or very cheap) as well
