I know there isn't enough time in the video to mention everyone's favorite examples of this phenomenon, so I'll put mine here. The first Gulf war in 1990 was kicked off by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. This, in turn was justified by Saddam Hussein as a response to Kuwaiti manipulation of the oil markets (hold on, it gets better), which prevented Iraq from repaying the loans it had taken from Kuwait. What did Iraq need all that money for? To fund their bloated military budget, of course! TLDR, Iraq's pathological need to win an imaginary arms race (prodded by weapons and oil companies) put them in hock to Kuwait, which ultimately led to war.

2025-02-01 05:28:47 +0000 UTCI remember Gerald Ford boasting during his 1976 acceptance speech - after a divided convention and with a 20-point deficit to Jimmy Carter in the polls - that, "For the first time in 16 years, a president can say to a national convention that tonight, no American is at war anywhere in the world." That sudden positive light was what turned Ford's seemingly doomed re-election campaign around and very quickly it was a close race. Now compare to conventions in this era. In 2020 it had been 18 consecutive years Americans had been at war, so no candidate mentioned it.
